Sinopse

In 'Remarks on Clarissa,' published in 1749, Sarah Fielding offers a critical yet affectionate analysis of Samuel Richardson's monumental epistolary novel, 'Clarissa Harlowe.' Fielding's prose is characterized by its insightful observations and clarity, demonstrating her keen understanding of the complex interplay of gender dynamics and moral philosophy within Richardson's work. She deftly navigates themes of virtue, agency, and societal expectations, situating her commentary within the burgeoning discourse on women's literature and the novel as a legitimate art form. This work also reflects Fielding's own literary developments as she champions emotional truth and narrative depth, aligning herself with Richardson's explorations while also carving out her unique voice in the literary landscape of the 18th century. Born in 1710, Sarah Fielding was an influential figure in the early development of the English novel and is often considered one of its pioneer female authors. As the sister of novelist Henry Fielding and an accomplished writer in her own right, she was surrounded by literary innovation. Her familiarity with contemporary works and her intimate understanding of women's issues undoubtedly informed her desire to articulate a nuanced response to 'Clarissa,' a narrative that profoundly impacted 18th-century literature. 'Helpful and thought-provoking, 'Remarks on Clarissa' is a must-read for both scholars and casual readers interested in the evolution of the novel and the role of women in literature. Fielding's adept analyses not only illuminate Richardson's narrative intentions but also invite contemporary audiences to reflect on the enduring significance of ethics and emotion in storytelling. This work will enrich your appreciation of both the literary tradition it engages with and the history of women's contributions to literature.

This story of a real-life Victorian mystery is a “meticulously researched true-crime account . . . its final revelation is a showstopper” (The New York Times).   In July 1864, Thomas Briggs was traveling home after visiting his niece and her husband for dinner. He boarded a first-class carriage on the 9:45 pm Hackney service of the North London railway. A short time later, two bank clerks entered the compartment and noticed blood pooled in the seat cushions and smeared all over the floor and windows. But there was no sign of Thomas Briggs. All that remained was his ivory-knobbed walking stick, his empty leather bag, and a bloodstained hat that, strangely, did not belong to Mr. Briggs.   The race to identify the killer and catch him as he fled on a boat to America was eagerly followed by the public on both sides of the Atlantic. The investigation and subsequent trial became a fixture in New York newspapers—and a frequent distraction from the Civil War that ravaged the nation. In Murder in the First-Class Carriage, Gold Dagger Award nominee Kate Colquhoun tells the gripping tale of a crime that shocked an era.   “A suspenseful, well-paced account of a baffling mystery.” —The Washington Post   “Deploying her skill as a historian, Colquhoun turns a single curious murder case into a fascinatingly quirky portrait of the underside of mid-Victorian London. I found it unputdownable.” —Daily Telegraph

The Rape Scandal that Puts You...

A harrowing investigation into law enforcement’s failure to process hundreds of thousands of rape kits across America—allowing many rapists to walk free. In 2011, advocacy groups estimated that up to 250,000 rape kits sat untested in police storage across the country. These kits, some from crimes dating as far back as the mid-1990s, represent a disturbing breakdown in law enforcement that has allowed many violent criminals to remain on the streets. In some cases, rape victims are kept in the dark about the investigations into the crimes committed against them. Legal expert Linda Fairstein illustrates this injustice with the story of a Los Angeles woman whose experience, Fairstein writes, “is a tragic example of the outrageous backlog of untested rape kits that has existed nationwide for more than a decade.” In The Rape Scandal that Puts You at Risk, Fairstein lays bare these failures of law enforcement and issues a rallying cry for women everywhere to demand change. Originally published in Cosmopolitan, this essay is now available in digital format for the first time and features a new introduction by the author.

Debating Gender - A Study of...

This work is an in-depth examination of medieval and contemporary discussions of gender in Islam, focusing in particular on views of women.
Ms. Harhash wisely introduces the discussion by clarifying the legal status of women in medieval Islam, which provides a useful framework for her discussion.
While her sympathy clearly lies with Averroes, I was particularly impressed by the chapter on al Ghazali, which traces a nuanced picture of al Ghazali's approach to women, highlighting striking differences in his various works and connecting his (to the modern ear) unpalatable claims about women- to his embracement of Sufism.
While Ms. Harhash is attracted to the "progressive" view of Averroes, she offers a lucid analysis of his core egalitarian statements in the commentary on the Republic without omitting to point out that his philosophical position is in some tension with the more traditional position in forming his legal decisions.
Ibn Taymiyyah is probably the biggest villain in Ms. Harhash's narrative and is portrayed as a kind of antipode to Averroes.
With respect to modern discussion, she focuses on Nawal El Saadawi and Fatima Mernissi, where she situates the modern discussion vis a vis its medieval counterpart and highlights differences and commonalities.
Ms. Harhash does a good job showing how the critique of the oppression of women in modern days leads to the same question that she had already addressed in Averroes, namely whether a critique of unjust structures in contemporary Islamic societies can be separated from a critique of Islam itself.
Overall, the thesis is a remarkable achievement. Ms. Harhash reconstructs the medieval and modern discussion with intellectual confidence and independence and brings out similarities and differences that are genuinely illuminating.
