Sinopse

In "Means and Ends of Education," John Lancaster Spalding presents a profound exploration of the purpose and practices of education within the context of late 19th-century American society. Spalding's work is characterized by its eloquent prose and a philosophical examination that merges pedagogy with moral development. He contemplates not merely the acquisition of knowledge, but the ethical implications of education as a means of shaping character and citizenship, thus situating his arguments within the broader discourse on the role of education in a democratic society. This text serves as both a critique and a manifesto for educational reform, urging educators to consider the holistic development of students amidst an increasingly industrialized age. John Lancaster Spalding, a prominent educational reformer and bishop, influenced the landscape of American education through his belief in the intrinsic link between moral and intellectual development. His experiences in navigating the challenges of post-Civil War America, as well as his deep engagement with Catholic educational principles, inform his perspective on the moral responsibilities faced by educators. Spalding's own scholarly background and philosophical leanings shape a narrative that elevates the importance of education beyond mere training, situating it firmly within the realm of personal and communal growth. "Means and Ends of Education" is a must-read for educators, scholars, and anyone invested in the future of education. Spalding's insights into the interconnectedness of knowledge and moral integrity resonate powerfully in contemporary discussions of educational philosophy. This book not only urges readers to reflect on the purpose of education but also challenges them to advocate for a system that genuinely nurtures the mind and spirit of its students.

Blackdom, New Mexico, was a township that lasted about thirty years. In this book, Timothy E. Nelson situates the township’s story where it belongs: along the settlement continuum in Mexico’s Northern Frontier. Dr. Nelson illuminates the set of conscious efforts that helped Black pioneers develop Blackdom Township into a frontier boomtown.
“Blackdom” started as an inherited idea of a nineteenth-century Afrotopia. The concept of creating a Blackdom was refined within Black institutions as part of the perpetual movement of Black Colonization. In 1903, thirteen Black men, encouraged by the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson decision, formed the Blackdom Townsite Company and set out to make Blackdom a real place in New Mexico, where they were outside the reach of Jim Crow laws.
Many believed that Blackdom was abandoned. However, new evidence shows that the scheme to build generational wealth continued throughout the twentieth century in other forms. During Blackdom’s boom times, in December 1919, Blackdom Oil Company shifted town business from a regenerative agricultural community to a more extractive model. Nelson has uncovered new primary source materials that suggest for Blackdom a newly discovered third decade. This story has never been entirely told or contextualized until now.
Reoriented to Mexico’s “northern frontier,” one observes Black ministers, Black military personnel, and Black freemasons who colonized as part of the transmogrification of Indigenous spaces into the American West. Nelson’s concept of the Afro-Frontier evokes a “Turnerian West,” but it is also fruitfully understood as a Weberian “Borderland.” Its history highlights a brief period and space that nurtured Black cowboy culture. While Blackdom’s civic presence was not lengthy, its significance—and that of the Afro-Frontier—is a critical window in the history of Afrotopias, Black Consciousness, and the notion of an American West.

The renowned travel writer delivers “a scathing account of how some missionary sects deal with indigenous peoples in their bid for the conquest of souls” (Library Journal).   Acclaimed travel essayist Norman Lewis spent his life traversing the globe and offering thoughtful commentary on the cultures he visited. In The Missionaries, he turns his critical lens on those missionaries who embed themselves in indigenous cultures to convert the locals to Christianity. What begins with the well-meaning goal of improving the lives of native people, though, often has the opposite effect. Focusing mainly on tribes in South America, but also in Indochina and the Pacific Islands, Lewis demonstrates how various missionary organizations betray their originating principals and—whether knowingly or not—contribute to the destruction of entire cultures on a scale equivalent to that of genocide.

This book is a bundle of several titles which are:
    - Dawn's Dilemma: Waking up in the morning is supposed to be a fresh start—a chance to begin anew, to seize the day. But for many, it is instead a moment of resistance, a time when the comfort of the bed feels more appealing than the promise of a productive day ahead. This paradox, where the desire to be productive and successful clashes with the reluctance to rise from sleep, is at the heart of what I call the "Awakening Paradox."
    - The Ultimate Enigma: The story of this enigma begins with a seemingly ordinary event that spiraled into an extraordinary mystery, captivating the minds of people across the globe. What started as an unexplained disappearance soon transformed into one of the most perplexing and widely discussed mysteries in recorded history. The vanishing of this individual—or object, depending on the version of the story one hears—left behind only traces of confusion, a scattering of evidence, and no clear answers.
    - The Emperor's Edge: Napoleon Bonaparte's journey from a modest Corsican background to one of history's greatest military leaders is nothing short of remarkable. Born on August 15, 1769, in Ajaccio, Corsica, a French territory that had only recently been acquired from the Genoese, Napoleon’s early years were shaped by the turbulent political climate of his homeland.
    - The Shadow Agents: Covert operations are a cornerstone of modern intelligence and national security strategies. They are defined by their secrecy and the fact that they are often conducted in a manner that prevents any overt acknowledgment of their existence. In essence, covert operations are activities undertaken by government agencies, intelligence services, or other organizations to influence events or gather information while keeping their involvement hidden from the public eye.

“A wide-ranging and detailed account of the design and development of what was arguably the best tank of World War II.” —Miniature Armoured Fighting Vehicles Association

Although the Red Army suffered continual heavy tank losses, the rugged and reliable T-34 was an immense success story and was ultimately instrumental in turning the tide of the war. This photographic history follows the story of this exceptional armored vehicle from its disastrous first action during Operation Barbarossa to its miraculous defense of Moscow, its envelopment of the Axis forces at Stalingrad and victory at Kursk, and finally, the advance to the gates of Warsaw then on to Berlin.

Packed with a wealth of images, including rare archive photographs and photographs of surviving examples, this is an extraordinary record of both the tank and its personnel. The accompanying text features an in-depth technical evaluation outlining the differences in the myriad of models, including detailed plans of each type, alongside a gripping breakdown of the tank’s entire operational history.

“I totally recommend this book for all who love Russian armor or what was one of the hardest and biggest tank battles during World War 2 at Kursk, superb book.” —Armorama

“A thoroughly definitive study of one of the world’s historic engines of war.” —The Army Rumour Service (ARRSE)

“This is about as comprehensive as anybody could want in tracing the development, production, operational deployment and technical elements of the T-34 and its derivatives. Whatever you might want to know about the tank is here. Supplemented by drawings, copious images and tables it is a go-to reference book.” —Michael McCarthy, battlefield guide
