  "قال أبو الحسن سعيد بن مسعدة الأخفش، رحمة الله عليه: هذا تفسير علم القوافي، ما هي، وكم عدَّتها. اعلمْ أن القافية آخر كلمة في البيت. وإنما قيل لها قافيةٌ لأنها تقفو الكلام. وفي قولهم قافية دليل على أنّها ليست بالحرف، لأن القافية مؤنثةٌ، والحرف مذكر، وإن كانوا قد يؤنثّون المذكّر. ولكن هذا قد سمع من العرب. وليست تؤخذ الأسماء بالقياس. ألا ترى أنَّ رجلاً وحائطاً وأشباه ذلك لا تؤخذ بالقياس، وإنما ننظر ما سمّته العرب فنتّبعه. والعرب لا تعرف الحروف. أخبرني من أثق به أنّهم قالوا لعربي فصيح: أنشدنا قصيدةً على الدال وغيرها من الحروف، فإذا هم لا يعرفون الحروف."
