"اعلم أن صناعة تأليف الكلام، من المنثور والمنظوم، تحتاج إلى أسباب كثيرة، وآلات جمة، وذلك بعد أن يركب الله تعالى في الإنسان الطبع القابل لذلك، المجيب إليه، فإنه متى لم يكن ثم طبع لم تفد تلك الآلات شيئاً البتة. فمثل الطبع كمثل النار الكامنة في الزناد، ومثل الآلات كمثل الحراق والحديدة التي يقدح بها، ألا ترى إنه إذا لم يكن في الزناد نار لا يفيد ذلك الحراق ولا تلك الحديدة شيئاً، إلا أن الطباع القابلة للعلوم مختلفة الأنحاء؛ فمنها ما يكون قابلاً لعلم الأدب كالنحو والتصريف وغيرهما، ومنها ما يكون قابلا للعلوم الدينية كأصول الفقه وأصول الدين وما جرى هذا المجرى، ومنها ما يكون قابلا لغير ذلك كالعلم الرياضي؛ كالحساب والهندسة، ومنها ما يكون قابلا لغير ذلك، كالصنائع والحر"
