  إن من أنواع الأسماء في العربية ما يعرف بالمقصور والممدود، والمقصور: الأسم الذي آخره ألف لازمة زائدة، نحو: ملهى وتقى، وبشرى، ومعزى، والممدود: ما آخره همزة قبلها ألف زائدة نحو: رداء، وقراء، وحمراء، وقد شاع عند العرب قصر الممدود، ولكن بعض الألفاظ الممدودة لها نظير من المقصور، وبينهما اختلاف في المعنى مما يؤدي إلى اللبس، وذلك مثل الصفاء والصفا، الغناء والغنى، والإناء والإنى، وقد ألف علماء في مؤلفاتهم عن علامات المقصور والممدود القياسية، وجمعوا المسموع منها، وذكروا كيفية كتابة المقصور، وبينوا كيفية تثنية المقصور والممدود وجمعهما، وذكروا المقصور الذي له نظير ممدود، وما لا نظير له منهما، والكتاب الذي نقدم لابن جابر نظم فيه ألفاظ المقصور والممدود، ومع السعي إلى شرح الألفاظ التي يأتي بها.
