Adottato nelle università, è uno dei classici riconosciuti della letteratura utopista russa: scritto infatti all'inizio degli anni '90 del XVIII secolo, per la sua condanna del dispotismo fu considerato dall'Imperatrice Caterina II la Grande più pericoloso di una guerra persa. In ventiquattro tappe, che sono altrettanti capitoli, il libro descrive un viaggio da Pietroburgo a Mosca appunto, fatto in carrozza da un nobile che viene a contatto con i vari aspetti della realtà dell'epoca.
  Il libro è corredato da una prefazione dello storico del populismo russo Franco Venturi già presente nella vecchia edizione.
