John Carter is mysteriously conveyed to Mars, where he discovers two intelligent species continually embroiled in warfare. Although he is a prisoner of four-armed green men, his Civil War experience and Earth-trained musculature give him superior martial abilities, and he is treated with deference by this fierce race. Falling in love with a princess of red humanoids (two-armed but egg-bearing), he contrives a daring escape and later rescues the red men from the hostility of another nation of their own race. In this struggle he enlists the aid of his former captors, whom he gradually civilizes, teaching them first the practical advantages of kindness to their beasts of burden and then of casting aside centuries of communal living in favor of the nuclear family. At last he even starts them on the path to mastering the arts of friedship and diplomacy. When the failure of the atmosphere-generator threatens the planet's inhabitants with extinction, Carter's luck, memory, and sheer determination make possible the salvation of the planet, but Carter himself falls unconscious before he knows the success of his efforts. The novel ends with his sudden involuntary return to Earth. (Summary by Thomas Copeland)Mostra libro

EPISODE 1: "Smart & sexy!" Set in a near future America, the world is a bit different. Powerful houses run the politics, and hence, the country, from behind the scenes. Sworn fealty to a powerful house can bring the average person a decent paying job in a world where society is scrambling to hold it together. Sheila, a smart lass from Tennessee, sees through this BS and is trying to open the public’s eyes to this power shift. Meanwhile, the Lebanese congressional correspondent Jasira agrees with Sheila, off the record. Yet, despite Sheila’s unarguable attraction to Jasira, she can’t help but question Jasira’s motives. (Excerpt from Book Review - DabofDarkness) EPISODE 2: Sheila never expected to meet America's first princess, but Irene Daco is hosting a dinner, and Jasira has invited Sheila to come. That decision would be so much easier if the nature of her relationship with Jasira were clear. When Sheila agrees to go, she finds her principled opposition to dynasty rule challenged by the things she discovers in the world of America's royal houses. Does Jasira support the dynasties and their influence upon the government she covers? Or is she, like Sheila, working to turn the country away from contemporary feudalism and back to democracy? These are the first two episodes of the serial THE AMERICAN FATHERS. It involves four dynasties, a Lebanese-American Journalist, an impassioned college professor, a security contractor, a flamboyant hitman, a rebel hacker, a megalomaniac, and a smart, idiosyncratic heiress. There are nine episodes in Season One. Sheila's point of view is central in Swept Away, Dinner Invitation, and Visitors. Ariyah My new next-door neighbor looks like a demon—and acts like one too! Most of the Akrellians now living on Earth after saving humanity from an alien invasion are super polite. The red-scaled, black-quilled behemoth living next door is a notable exception, and he doesn't bother to return my enthusiastic greeting with anything more than an impatient growl. But I know the secret to making friends, and that secret is a dozen red velvet cupcakes with cute monster faces on them, just in time for Halloween. The grumpy, smoldering volcano of a male might pretend he's not interested in my offering, but he can't resist my sweet treats for long. Of course, he might just be too hot to handle, because this Akrellian serves a darker Dancer, and the drumbeats from his primal song draw me to the domineering and demanding male while his wild howl thrills my blood—even as it sends me fleeing. When he gives chase, I try not to reveal how eager I am to be caught. It's just too bad that he believes I'm an assassin who tried to poison him. Contains mature themes.Mostra libro
