Beschreibung

Erased from History: 11 Books on Extinct Cities is a compelling anthology that probes the silent echoes of vanished civilizations through an intriguing fusion of historical analysis, literary imagination, and archaeological investigation. The collection weaves a tapestry of narratives and scholarly essays, each uncovering the layers of forgotten metropolises. From tales of dreamlike landscapes to probing psychological analyses of cultural memories, the anthology showcases a spectrum of styles from the evocative, poetic musings to methodical scholarly inquiryâ€"capturing the kaleidoscope of human experiences tethered to these sunken realms. Standout works elucidate how these lost cities continue to shape contemporary understandings, though their names may no longer be inscribed in common memory. The contributing authors, a remarkable ensemble ranging from literary icons like William Shakespeare and Gustave Flaubert to pioneering figures in archaeology such as Heinrich Schliemann and Austen Henry Layard, contribute profound insights into the theme of extinction and monumental legacy. Each author, through their unique lens, reflects on the ebb and flow of empires and civilizations, offering insights that resonate with the historical movements of romanticism, psychoanalysis, and cultural preservation. Their confluence enriches the anthology, linking past narratives with present understandings, and underscoring the timeless dialogue between the human mind and the ruins it leaves behind. This anthology invites readers to embark on a journey through time, exploring the multiplicity of human achievement and its eventual absorption into the annals of history. It is an indispensable resource for those eager to comprehend the intricate tapestry of human civilization and its ever-shifting boundaries. As a reader, you will be compelled to engage with different epochs and styles, bridging the gap between lost realms and modern thought. Erased from History offers not just insight, but a vivid reminder of the forgotten cities whose whispers continue to inform our understanding of cultural and historical identity.

“J.R. Jamison has written one of the most humane and challenging memoirs to come out of the Midwest. This is a perfect read to begin talking about all the conflicting, yet connected, issues forcing a reckoning for those who thought they knew what the world was, and who they were in it. Indeed, we are all more than heroes and villains, and Jamison does a great job of showing how and where our humanity gets lost between the two. I’m so glad I let him guide me through the trip.”-- Ashley C. Ford, author of "Somebody’s Daughter" and host of the HBO podcast "Lovecraft Country Radio"

J.R. Jamison spends his days in a world of trigger warnings and safe spaces, while his trigger-happy dad, Dave, spends his questioning why Americans have become so sensitive. Yet at the height of the 2016 election, the two decide to put political differences aside and travel together to rural Missouri for Dave’s fifty-five year class reunion. But with the constant backdrop of the Trump vs. Clinton battle at every turn, they are forced to explore one formidable question: Will the trip push them further apart or bring them closer together?

Dave has always accepted his gay son. J.R. must learn if he can accept his conservative-leaning dad. Traveling together through the rural, sun-beaten landscapes of Missouri, the two meet people along the way who challenge their concepts of right and wrong, and together they uncover truths about their family’s past that reveals more than political differences—they discover a lesson on the human condition that lands them on the international pages of The Guardian.

"Hillbilly Queer" is an enduring love story between a dad and son who find that sometimes the differences between us aren’t really that different at all.

The early years of World War II saw Nazi Germany dominate Europe, but by the end of 1941, as Adolf Hitler continued to build his Empire, events in the Pacific took on their own momentum as Imperial Japan and America became locked in battle after the bombing of the US Naval Fleet at Pearl Harbor.

As the smoke and flames rose from Pearl, America and its President, Franklin D Roosevelt, could no longer remain on the sidelines of the war that had been waging in Europe for over two years, and on December 7th, 1941, the hostilities were transformed into a global conflict. This would mark the beginning of a new chapter in the Second World War where the Americans joined the fight for what Roosevelt had laid out as the Four Freedoms.

The first was Freedom of Speech, the second, Freedom of Religion and Expression, the third Freedom from Want, and last but by no means least, the fourth was Freedom from Fear. The story of how the nation, which so treasured its neutrality and had gone to such great lengths to avoid fighting on foreign soil, joined the war, will follow in the footsteps of Roosevelt, the man responsible for the American Dream.

This book contains two side-stories, which are the following:
1: Less than a decade after the Second World War, the Cuban revolution happened. It went on and off, irregularly causing riots and rebel actions, as well as tyrannical government suppression, and it all lingered on during the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States. What was it that typified the Cuban Revolution?
Who were the players and what did they do?
    Which battles were most significant?
And last but not least, what was the final result it all led to in the end?
These and many other questions will be answered in this comprehensive guide, which will give you a better understanding about the history of one of the most controversial economies on the huge island near the United States coastline.
2: Fidel Castro is probably the most famous person in Cuba. His life was devoted to what he perceived to be a righteous cause for equality and freedom from erroneous ideologies.
He led people in the revolution, made a difference in the Cold War in decisions that concerned communism, Marxism, and other economic structures, and he finally became the president of Cuba, until he passed away not too long ago.
Whether you like him or not, it’s definitely interesting to learn more about what made Fidel Castro so influential, and why he remained the president of his home country for so long. Different opinions about him exist. In order to form your own, it would be helpful to base it on the correct information. And you can find that in this book.

Hanns Heinz Ewers was born on 3rd November 1871 in Düsseldorf, Germany.
His first published poem was at 17 on the death, after a reign of only 99 days, of the German Emperor Frederick III.
A stint in the German military was cut short after only 44 days because of his myopia. Writing was to be the way forward for him with a book of satiric verse published in 1901. At the same time he co-founded a literary vaudeville troupe that toured central and eastern Europe before censors and expenses forced its closure. An inveterate traveller he was in South America when the Great War enveloped Europe and he relocated to New York.
From here his story darkens. Although by now a successful and admired author he was arrested in the U S in 1918 as a German Agent on the pretext of his travels and a falsified Swiss passport. Interned, he was released in 1921 and returned to Germany. He claimed only to be raising money for the German Red Cross.
His literary fame is decidedly easier to clarify. His novels beginning with ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’ in 1910 are dark, they bristle with evil intent and are littered with characters who have a dubious moral compass and yet, along with his short stories, are brazen, brilliant feats of literary narrative.
He also wrote and published plays, fairy tales, opera librettos, critical essays and lectured for many years on ‘The Religion of Satan’ and was one of the first to write scripts for the cinema, which he considered a legitimate art form.
As the Weimar republic began its chaotic death throes Ewers became attracted to the rising Nazi Party. At first he was warmly received despite disagreeing with its anti-semitism (his most famed literary character had a Jewish mistress) and he was even commissioned by Hitler to write a biography of the Nazi martyr Horst Wessel. This together with his own homosexuality culminated with his works being banned in 1934 and his assets and property seized. It took him many years to have the ban lifted. This association rightfully clouds his personal reputation but has meant his literary contributions are also overlooked and neglected.
Hanns Heinz Ewers died of tuberculosis on 12th June 1943 in his Berlin apartment.
