Jesus Christ was a Zen master?
In at least one version of early Christian belief, he sure sounded like one.
Early Christianity was far from the gentle and unified belief system that we have been led to believe it was. In fact, in the earliest stages of its development, interpretations of the meanings of Jesus’ teachings varied widely, were hotly debated, and differing views were not tolerated well at all.
The Jesus narrative that eventually won out was passed on to future generations while the losers had their books burned and adherents imprisoned, tortured, or put to death. Talk about issues with freedom of religion!
Luckily, an early Christian group called the “Gnostics”, in seeing their beloved books burned and adherents mistreated, buried their most important works in hopes of future discovery.
These works were discovered in Nag Hammadi, Egypt in 1945 and have shed quite a bit of light on an alternative and very different interpretation of Jesus’ teachings—one that was widely followed in the early years of Christianity, yet more closely resembles the “enlightenment” teachings of Zen and Buddhism.
The Zen-like nature of the Gnostic’s Jesus is the focus of this work.

Sometimes it seems as if business exists purely to enrich a small elite. While the world is facing unprecedented challenges, it appears that businesses are only interested in making profits or paying bonuses. Big businesses are powerful machines. We all know they have the potential to cause enormous social and environmental harm; but with their resources and expertise they can also be great engines of positive change. Rather than fighting the power of business, should we be seeking to harness it? Everybody's Business is a journey through the business world. We meet the companies that are driving business forward by mobilising to tackle the challenges we all face. At its heart, this is a story of businesses doing what they do best: delivering products and services that people need, creating jobs and finding new ways to solve old problems. It's a story of people taking the initiative, and finding inspiration in the positive impact of their actions. We see how some of today's leading companies are realising that lasting success comes from having a purpose broader than making a profit. They know that business should benefit customers, employees, suppliers, neighbours and the wider world, as well as shareholders. Enduring value comes from making business work for everybody.

In 1939 Dick Gorle was already a professional soldier but stationed in India. After the Dunkirk disaster he was recalled and initially involved in training recruits at Plymouth before going north to form the Highland Division Gunners. We hear of the journey to Egypt and thereafter it is intense action at El Alamein under Monty and the long grueling advance to Tripoli. The invasion of Sicily followed and Gorle describes the horrors of war in the mountains and towns while the locals appeared almost oblivious to the momentous events unfolding around them.Called back to attend Staff College, Gorle rejoined the fray in North West Europe as his Regiment, part of the Lowland Division, received thanks and welcome from those liberated, and fierce and deadly resistance from the retreating Germans. His memoir sums up the elation of victory, the closeness of comradeship and the desperate sadness of losses.

What framework can guide Christian engagement with major economic, social and political issues in public life in 21st century Europe?
What other schools of thought exist apart from Catholic Social Teaching and Christian Democracy?

Sallux has collaborated with the Jubilee Centre in Cambridge over several years to apply a new framework, agenda and strategy for Christian social reform, called Relational Thinking. It starts with the Christian belief that human beings are created by a relational God to form relational societies – the contemporary application of the ancient adage to 'love our neighbour as ourselves'.

This book is a compilation of fi ve reports, two of which discuss the overall concept of Relational Thinking, while the others demonstrate how it can be applied to three contemporary issues: the need for monetary reform, the challenges of artifi cial intelligence and the ethics of remuneration. You can fi nd other examples of issues being analysed from a relational perspective, from business to city transformation.

Deeply biblical, Relational Thinking builds bridges through the language of relationships to connect Christians with people of other faiths or none, and o er a fresh approach to Europe's greatest public policy challenges today.
