Summary

This carefully crafted ebook: "THE SOULS OF BLACK FOLK" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents.
"The Souls of Black Folk" is a cornerstone of African-American literary history. Published in 1903, this seminal book of essays incited many white supremacists who discredited it as "dangerous" and "imaginative." Drawing upon his own personal experiences of racism, Du Bois argued that African Americans are forced to wear a "veil" of color line, that is, they are forced to live their race every single day of their lives. This is why a strong political Black leadership must emerge from within the community and continue the fight for their rights. A century later, African Americans are still fighting these personal and political battles against racism and Du Bois' words have never run as true as they are now.
W. E. B. Du Bois (1868–1963) was an American sociologist, historian, civil rights activist, Pan-Africanist, author, and editor. He was the first African American to earn a doctorate and to become a professor of history, sociology and economics at Atlanta University. Du Bois was one of the co-founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and a prominent the leader of the Niagara Movement, a group of African-American activists who wanted equal rights for blacks.

This challenging and inspiring collection of essays constructively frames the story of Black America—not as a tragedy involving helpless victims, but as a model for the nation. Scholars and grassroots leaders recount the history—the gritty, painful, but often triumphant account of what blacks accomplished after slavery was ended. Denied access to the institutions of white America, they built their own churches, schools, hotels, and a host of other successful enterprises. Their resilience produced amazing increases in literacy, family formation, and income.

Today's unsung grassroots leaders are the living evidence of the power of resilience. They use their stories of overcoming adversity and their own fallibility to help others. The organizations they create heal their communities.

This volume presents the insights of scholars who warn of the dangerous forces that threaten to shackle the ability of blacks to succeed today. They warn that, by accepting the notion that black adversity continues to be the product of systemic racism and is therefore unchangeable, no one would need to step up to the realities of a responsible life. This kind of thinking has led to lowering standards in education and even in the judicial system. The scholars outline positive paths to the future.

Verena Kast refers to Sisyphus as the "myth of the forty-year-olds," who often experience their lot in life to be a Sisyphus task. Are our human efforts all in vain, or is there some meaning to be found? In the end, it is a struggle with death itself.
Dr. Kast interprets everyday events, fairy tales and psychotherapy issues in light of the Sisyphus theme, rendering it a kaleidoscope through which we can look deeply into ourselves.

"Verena Kast deals with a problem that also fascinated Nietzsche and Freud. This book is packed with down-to-earth experience, clinical anecdotes, wit and insight." - Murray Stein

This short audiobook is part of the Philosophies Ancient and Modern series, which attempts to make Western philosophy more accessible to the general public.
In this volume, George Stock provides a concise primer on Stoicism, the ancient philosophy that maintained that the universe is governed entirely by fate, and that humans can achieve happiness only by cultivating a calm acceptance of the vicissitudes of life. Among the Stoics of the Greek and Roman world were its founder, Zeno, the former slave Epictetus, and the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius. George Stock discusses not only the Stoic ethics, but also less well-known aspects of Stoicism, such as its division of the branches of philosophy, its account of logic, and its natural philosophy.Summary by Leon Mire

Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874 - 1922) was a polar explorer who led three British expeditions to the Antarctic.
During the second expedition, from 1907 to 1909, he and three companions established a new record for the “farthest South latitude,” which was 97 miles from the South Pole and the closest in pole exploration history. Members of his team also climbed Mount Erebus, the most active volcano on Antarctica. For these achievements, Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII on his return home.
A few years later, his ship - The Endurance - became trapped in pack ice and was slowly crushed. The crew escaped by camping on the sea ice, then launching their lifeboats to reach the inhabited island of South Georgia, a stormy ocean voyage of 720 nautical miles. It became Shackleton's most famous exploit.
