Urban development has long been a critical component of economic and social growth worldwide. As populations continue to increase and cities expand, the planning, management, and policies surrounding urban spaces become ever more complex. Urban development encompasses the physical, economic, and social transformation of cities, focusing on housing, infrastructure, transportation, and public spaces, while also addressing broader issues such as economic disparity, environmental sustainability, and social justice.
Historically, urbanization has been driven by industrialization, technological advancements, and shifts in global economic patterns. The migration of people from rural to urban areas in search of better job opportunities and living conditions has accelerated this process. As a result, cities have grown in both size and importance, becoming hubs for innovation, culture, and commerce. However, this growth has not come without challenges. Rapid urbanization often leads to overcrowded living conditions, increased pollution, traffic congestion, and the strain of public services.
At the heart of urban development is the relationship between power, policy, and planning. Political decisions and governmental priorities often shape the trajectory of cities, influencing everything from zoning laws and land use to infrastructure development and housing affordability. In this context, urban planning becomes not just a technical exercise, but a deeply political one, with differing interests—ranging from developers and business leaders to community groups and activists—competing for influence. The way these decisions are made can either foster inclusivity and equity or exacerbate social inequalities.

“A carefully crafted ethnography on the South Indian festival of the village goddess Gangamma in the pilgrimage town of Tirupati” (Choice).

During the goddess Gangamma’s festival in the town of Tirupati, lower-caste men take guises of the goddess, and the streets are filled with men wearing saris, braids, and female jewelry. By contrast, women participate by intensifying the rituals they perform for Gangamma throughout the year, such as cooking and offering food. Joyce Burkhalter Flueckiger argues that within the festival ultimate reality is imagined as female and women identify with the goddess, whose power they share. Vivid accounts by male and female participants offer new insights into Gangamma’s traditions and the nature of Hindu village goddesses.

“Flueckiger’s rich and colorful descriptions of the stories, festivals, and worshipers connected with the goddess Gangamma evoke a world that previously had been accessible to very few living outside southern India. This work makes available to readers a close-up view of an extremely fascinating aspect of living Hinduism.” —David L. Haberman, Indiana University

“Carefully crafted. . . . Through these rituals, stories and lives, the author reveals new ways of comprehending gender both at the cosmological and human level.” —Ann Grodzins Gold, Syracuse University

Living and Dying with Marcel Proust is the result of a lifetime's reading of, reflection on, and love for Proust's masterpiece, In Search of Lost Time.

One of the masterpieces of twentieth-century fiction, Proust's In Search of Lost Time describes a unique journey, combining elements drawn from the timeless narratives of great expectations and lost illusions. In this lively and entertaining book, Christopher Prendergast traces that journey as it unfolds on an arc defined by the polarities in his title: living and dying.

At once a careful contemplation Proust's masterwork and an exploration of the rich sensory and impressionistic tapestry of a lived world, Living and Dying with Marcel Proust addresses such disparate Proustian obsessions as insomnia, food, digestion, color, addiction, memory, breath and breathing, breasts, snobbism, music, and humor.

Entertaining and erudite, Prendergast's book will surely become the companion for all listeners either about to reembark on Proust's three-million-word journey or setting out for the first time.

    Marlborough's Shadow - The Life...

Several writers have remarked that Marlborough could have never achieved his great military success during the War of the Spanish Succession without the support, industry and ingenuity of his Chief of Staff, Quartermaster General and Chief of Intelligence, General William Cadogan, who became the 1st Earl of Cadogan, and who, in 1722, succeeded Marlborough as Commander-in Chief of the British Army. Apart from the other considerations Marlborough, then in his 50's, was relatively frail and prone to fevers and headaches, whereas Cadogan, the better educated officer, was still in his early 30's and very fit. This, the story of a most able young general, is a must for all those interested in military history, particularly that relating to the early 18th century. However, Cadogan was a more complex -and more interesting -personality than his career as a soldier indicates. He possessed the charm, the wisdom, the powers of persuasion and the linguistic ability to make an outstanding diplomat. He proved, indeed, to be the brightest roving ambassador of the reign of George I. And yet, despite all his positive attributes he was not a man political or of financial integrity.

Abidjan USA - Music Dance and...

“Studies of four musicians . . . and a broader discussion about diaspora and migration provides an important study of African music in the United States.” —Alex Perullo, author of Live from Dar es Salaam

Daniel B. Reed integrates individual stories with the study of performance to understand the forces of diaspora and mobility in the lives of musicians, dancers, and mask performers originally from Côte d’Ivoire who now live in the United States. Through the lives of four Ivorian performers, Reed finds that dance and music, being transportable media, serve as effective ways to understand individual migrants in the world today. As members of an immigrant community who are geographically dispersed, these performers are unmoored from their place of origin and yet deeply engaged in presenting their symbolic roots to North American audiences. By looking at performance, Reed shows how translocation has led to transformations on stage, but he is also sensitive to how performance acts as a way to reinforce and maintain community. Abidjan USA provides a multifaceted view of community that is at once local, national, and international, and where identity is central, but transportable, fluid, and adaptable.

“Daniel B. Reed’s scholarship is solid and his writing style is thoroughly engaging. The topic is novel; there are fascinating twists and turns throughout.” —Eric Charry, editor of Hip Hop Africa

“This study’s attention to the intersection of lived experiences with wider historical events and social formations, as well as the author’s careful analysis of Ivorian ballet and the dances and drum rhythms that constitute the genre, make Abidjan USA an important intervention in ethnomusicology and folklore.” —Journal of American Folklore
