Sinossi

In "Early London: Prehistoric, Roman, Saxon and Norman," Walter Besant meticulously delineates the rich tapestry of London's history from its prehistoric origins through the complexities of Roman, Saxon, and Norman invasions. His literary style marries vivid descriptions with rigorous historical analysis, weaving together archaeological findings with contemporary accounts. This work not only serves as a comprehensive chronicle of the city's evolution but also highlights the socio-political dynamics that shaped it, providing a crucial context for understanding medieval urban development within Europe. Walter Besant was a prominent historical novelist and social reformer, whose deep-seated interest in London's past is interwoven with a broader critique of Victorian society. His background as a historian and a member of the Royal Society of Literature informed his approach to this subject, allowing him to bridge narrative storytelling with academic rigor. Besant's passion for London's heritage stemmed from his own experiences in the city, making him an astute observer of its enduring legacy. This book is a must-read for anyone intrigued by the origins of one of the world's greatest cities. Besant's blend of engaging prose and scholarly insight offers readers both informative content and a sense of the city's ancient pulse, ensuring this volume remains essential for historians, students, and enthusiasts of urban history alike.

In this timely and incisive book, Sergei Medvedev argues that Russia's war in Ukraine was not merely a whim of Putin's obsession: rather, it was the result of two decades of authoritarian degradation and post-imperial ressentiment, a culmination of Putin's regime and of Russia's entire imperial history. Building on his prize-winning book The Return of the Russian Leviathan, Medvedev argues that it was not only Putin that started this war, but Russia itself, which, by and large, has imagined and embraced it with enthusiasm, seeking to relive its own military glory and colonial past.

As Apollo 11’s name suggests, there were actually a number of Apollo missions that came before, many of which included testing the rockets and different orbital and lunar modules in orbit. In fact, it wasn’t until Apollo 8 that a manned vehicle was sent towards the Moon and back, and before that mission, the most famous Apollo mission was Apollo 1, albeit for all the wrong reasons. There were no delusions regarding the dangers of manned space travel, but they were brought home on January 27, 1967, when all three astronauts were killed by a fire that ignited in the cabin during a launch rehearsal. To this day, there is still debate over what ignited the fire, but the disaster made clear that the modules being used by NASA had a series of fatal flaws.
In the decades after the Apollo program, American Space Shuttles flew over 130 missions and successfully completed over 98% of them, but unfortunately, the two most famous missions were the ones that ended tragically aboard the Challenger and Columbia.
The notorious date of the Challenger disaster was commemorated by the crew of the Columbia while they were in space in 2003, and a few days later, on February 1, the Columbia was due to land at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 09:16. At 08:59, 17 minutes before it was scheduled to land, Columbia was passing over Texas 37 miles above the ground and reentering the atmosphere. Mission Control was discussing a landing gear tire pressure issue with Mission Commander Rick Husband when radio transmission from the shuttle abruptly ceased. Within hours, it would become clear that Columbia had disintegrated over Central Texas, scattering debris and the remains of the seven people aboard over thousands of square miles of east Texas and southern Louisiana.

Dynastic Legacy explores the far-reaching influence of three of China’s most remarkable dynasties—the Song, Ming, and Qing—each of which played a pivotal role in shaping Chinese society, governance, innovation, and culture. From the artistic brilliance and technological advances of the Song, to the maritime exploration and architectural wonders of the Ming, to the imperial dominance and eventual collapse of the Qing, this book offers a comprehensive look at how dynastic leadership shaped the trajectory of Chinese history.
The Song Dynasty is renowned for ushering in an age of innovation, commerce, and cultural richness. It laid the foundation for modern banking, expanded printing technology, and saw a flourishing of Confucian philosophy and visual arts. The Ming Dynasty, famous for the Forbidden City and the voyages of Zheng He, emphasized stability, infrastructure, and defense—leaving a powerful legacy of order and cultural refinement. The Qing Dynasty, the last imperial dynasty, extended China’s borders to their greatest historical extent and governed through a complex yet effective administrative system—before internal decay and foreign pressure brought about its end.
With detailed accounts of key emperors, political shifts, societal structures, and enduring cultural contributions, Dynastic Legacy paints a vivid portrait of the challenges and triumphs that defined imperial rule. This volume offers readers an engaging and educational journey through the dynasties that shaped modern China, highlighting both the brilliance and the burdens of centralized power.

Lies My Liberal Teacher Told Me...

A college professor debunks the myths that have infiltrated America's school curricula.
In 1995, James W. Loewen penned the classic work of criticism Lies My Teacher Told Me, a left-leaning corrective that addressed much of what was sanitized and omitted from American history books.
But in the decades that followed, false leftist narratives—as wrong as those they supplanted—have come to dominate American academia and education. Now, in the same spirit but updated for 2024, Wilfred Reilly demolishes the scholastic myths propagated by the left, uncovers fresh angles on “established” events, and turns what we think we know about history upside down. Among the popular lies he debunks:“The ‘Red Scare’ was a moral panic that caught no commies”“Native Americans were peaceful people who spent all day dancing”“European colonialism was—empirically—a no-good, terrible, very bad thing”“The racist ‘Southern Strategy’ turned the South Republican”“The Vietnam War was unpopular and pointless”

Lies My Liberal Teacher Told Me sets the record straight on many of these myths, explaining that there actually were communists in Hollywood; that many Native American tribes were cannibals, owned slaves and made them march the Trail of Tears with them; and that history, while almost always bad for Black Americans, was much worse for all of us than we tend to think it was.
Smart, irreverent, and deeply researched, Lies My Liberal Teacher Told Me will revolutionize your understanding of history and reveal a new and refreshing way to teach and think about the past.
