The Unnatural World chronicles a disparate band of unlikely heroes: an effervescent mad scientist who would fertilize the seas; a pigeon obsessive bent on bringing back the extinct; a low-level government functionary in China doing his best to clean up his city, and more. These scientists, billionaires, and ordinary people are all working toward saving the best home humanity is ever likely to have. What is the threat? It is us. In a time when a species dies out every ten minutes, when summers are getting hotter, winters colder, and oceans higher, some people still deny mankind's effect on the Earth. But all of our impacts on the planet have ushered in what qualifies as a new geologic epoch, thanks to global warming, mass extinction, and such technologies as nuclear weapons or plastics. The Unnatural World examines the world we have created and analyzes the glimmers of hope emerging from the efforts of incredible individuals seeking to change our future. Instead of a world without us, this history of the future shows how to become good gardeners, helping people thrive along with an abundance of plants, animals, all the exuberant profusion of life on Earth—a better world with us.

'It's a preposterous plan. Still, if you do get up it, I think it'll be the hardest thing that's been done in the Himalayas.' So spoke Chris Bonington when Peter Boardman and Joe Tasker presented him with their plan to tackle the unclimbed West Wall of Changabang - the Shining Mountain - in 1976. Bonington's was one of the more positive responses; most felt the climb impossibly hard, especially for a two-man, lightweight expedition. This was, after all, perhaps the most fearsome and technically challenging granite wall in the Garhwal Himalaya and an ascent - particularly one in a lightweight style - would be more significant than anything done on Everest at the time. The idea had been Joe Tasker's. He had photographed the sheer, shining, white granite sweep of Changabang's West Wall on a previous expedition and asked Pete to return with him the following year. Tasker contributes a second voice throughout Boardman's story, which starts with acclimatisation, sleeping in a Salford frozen food store, and progresses through three nights of hell, marooned in hammocks during a storm, to moments of exultation at the variety and intricacy of the superb, if punishingly difficult, climbing. It is a story of how climbing a mountain can become an all-consuming goal, of the tensions inevitable in forty days of isolation on a two-man expedition; as well as a record of the moment of joy upon reaching the summit ridge against all odds. First published in 1978, The Shining Mountain is Peter Boardman's first book. It is a very personal and honest story that is also amusing, lucidly descriptive, very exciting, and never anything but immensely readable. It was awarded the John Llewelyn Rhys Prize for literature in 1979, winning wide acclaim. His second book, Sacred Summits, was published shortly after his death in 1982. Peter Boardman and Joe Tasker died on Everest in 1982, whilst attempting a new and unclimbed line. Both men were superb mountaineers and talented writers. Their literary legacy lives on through the Boardman Tasker Prize for Mountain Literature, established by family and friends in 1983 and presented annually to the author or co-authors of an original work which has made an outstanding contribution to mountain literature. Keep Sharp is Dr. Sanjay Gupta’s comprehensive guide to cognitive dysfunction disease in its various forms, including dementia, and the prevention, treatment, and strategies to cope.
Gupta bravely initiated a noble and global quest to gather up and analyze how doctors tackle brain function problems and cognitive challenges. He holds an impressive list of characters and anecdotes from his efforts..
Keep Sharp appeals to a diversified bevy of readers as a double gem for popular science and medical advice. Although avoiding medical jargon is impossible for cognitive dysfunction, Gupta shows us a simplified, engaging, and compelling story built around one of the most complex objects we know of—the human brain. Defining his terms right out of the gate gives the reader what they need to understand and act upon. The reader begins to learn how our physical and mental activities effect our brains. Boosting one’s brain prowess with medically established methods to help prevent Alzheimer's’ arises as a dominant theme.
Dr. Gupta sculpted his narrative's contents with plenty of advice for those who show symptoms of the first stages of dementia. He puts his arm around the reader, tells him or her how to get the help they need, secure a proper diagnosis, and how to come to grips with the most adverse effects.
Gupta pieces together valuable resources in the final chapter to guide those who carry a diagnosis of dementia. Though his approach is predictably straightforward and practical, he infuses it with the empathy and understanding of a good doctor. His goal: bring the issue of Alzheimer’s, its significance, its challenges, and possible solutions to a broader audience.
This book is not intended as medical advice. If you have health problems, consult with your physician. Rather than replace Dr. Gupta's book, it serves to complement.it.

The history of the Earth to be very precise, is concerned with the evolution and development of the planet Earth in the Solar System. It also refers to the series of events and periods that paved the way to the evolution of life on Earth. All branches of Science from the ancient times to the modern times have made their significant contribution to understanding the main events of the Earth from its past to the present. The age of the planet Earth can be deduced to be around one-third of the age of the entire universe. Several events related to the geological changes have occurred in the timespan of the origin and evolution of the Earth. These events have been related to the formation of Earth in the Universe due to the various extra-terrestrial events and the emergence of life on Earth. We would discuss the process of the formation of the planet Earth and the subsequent advent of life for the first time on Earth.
The geological changes occurring on the planet have been a characteristic behavior of the Earth’s crust since the primordial times. The geological changes along with the biological changes have been the root cause of the evolution of life on Earth. Since the first evidence of life on Earth, species have continued to flourish and get extinct at the same time. Even the process of the continuous movement of the plate tectonics has played a major role in shaping the continents and the oceans of the Earth’s crust. Several changes that occur in the biosphere of the Earth like the ozone layer, the conditions of the different types of soils, the proliferation of the various forms of the greenhouse gases and the events leading to global warming – all of these have played a major role in advancing the primitive Earth to the planet what it has become today.
When considered in the modern phase of the planet Earth, significant changes have been observed in the natural environments since the time of the 1940s. Various forms of developments in the field of technology have caused different kinds of changes to the planet Earth. Man has been able to explore deeper into the Universe and the Solar System with the help of advanced technology. While global warming remains the greatest threat to the existence of the planet Earth, several awareness programs are being developed throughout the world to make our planet a better place to live for the future generations as well. After all – Earth is Our Home!

A Thirsty Land - The Fight for...

“An important story not just about [Texas’s] water history, but also about its social, economic, and political identity” (Western Historical Quarterly).

As a changing climate threatens the whole country with deeper droughts and more furious floods that put ever more people and property at risk, Texas has become a bellwether state for water debates. Will there be enough water for everyone? Is there the will to take the steps necessary to defend ourselves against the sea? Is it in the nature of Americans to adapt to nature in flux?

The most comprehensive—and comprehensible—book on contemporary water issues, A Thirsty Land delves deep into the challenges faced not just by Texas but also by the nation, as we struggle to find a way to balance the changing forces of nature with our own ever-expanding needs. Part history, part science, part adventure story, and part travelogue, this book puts a human face on the struggle to master that most precious and capricious of resources, water. Seamus McGraw goes to the taproots, talking to farmers, ranchers, businesspeople, and citizen activists, as well as to politicians and government employees. Their stories provide chilling evidence that Texas—and indeed the nation—is not ready for the next devastating drought, the next catastrophic flood. Ultimately, however, A Thirsty Land delivers hope. This deep dive into one of the most vexing challenges facing Texas and the nation offers glimpses of the way forward in the untapped opportunities that water also presents.

“A hard look at a hard problem: finding sufficient water to live in a place without much of it. . . . McGraw’s fine book serves as a useful guide. Observers of Western waterways will want to have this on their shelves alongside the likes of Marc Reisner and Charles Bowden.” —Kirkus Reviews

“In stark prose that often gleams like a bone pile bleached in the sun, McGraw travels back and forth across Texas to give a free-ranging but deadeye view of the crisis on the horizon.” —Texas Monthly

“It’s hard to write about the slow creep of environmental crises like drought without resorting to shock tactics or getting lost in the weeds . . . [McGraw] draws out the conflicts in compelling ways by drilling into the plight of individual water users. Even if you feel no connection to Texas, these stories are relevant to every part of the country.” —Outside

“Interviewing both scientific experts and everyday water users, [McGraw] clearly delineates the competing interests, describes political and geological reality, and makes a compelling argument for statewide water policy that utilizes modern technology and fairly weighs parochial needs against the good of the whole.” —Arizona Daily Star, Southwest Books of the Year
