Sinopse

In 'Mars: Our New Home?', a visionary anthology curated with contributions from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the U.S. Congress, readers are invited into a multi-disciplinary exploration of humankind's potential future on the Red Planet. Blending scientific rigor with legislative insights, this collection spans a wide array of literary styles – from white papers and legislative texts to speculative essays. Each piece plays a crucial role in building a nuanced understanding of the feasibility, challenges, and implications of establishing a human settlement on Mars. The anthology stands out not only for its diversity of perspectives but also for the way it grounds futuristic dreams in present-day political and scientific realities. The contributors, though from seemingly disparate spheres, share a common goal: to push the boundaries of what's possible in space exploration and settlement. The backgrounds of NASA's scientists and engineers, with their thorough command of aerospace technology and planetary science, merge with the policy-making acumen of U.S. Congress members. This blend of expertise ensures a comprehensive examination of Mars colonization, aligning with historical mandates like the Space Act of 1958 and reflecting contemporary debates on space governance and ethics. 'Mars: Our New Home?' offers readers an unparalleled opportunity to engage with a topic that sits at the crossroads of science and policy. It presents a compelling case for the importance of interdisciplinary approaches when tackling the vast challenge of Mars colonization. Those interested in space exploration, planetary science, and the sociopolitical aspects of extraterrestrial settlement will find this anthology to be an invaluable resource. It invites a broad audience to ponder the future of humanity beyond Earth, opening up a dialogue between the scientific community and policymakers to envision and work towards a shared vision for our species' off-world aspirations.

    Trust - Creating the Foundation...

TrustCreating the Foundation for Entrepreneurship in Developing CountriesEntrepreneurial ventures often fail in the developing world because of the lack of something taken for granted in the developed world: trust. Over centuries the developed world has built up customs and institutions like enforceable contracts, an impartial legal system, credible regulatory bodies, even unofficial but respected sources of information like Yelp or Consumer Reports that have created a high level of what scholar and entrepreneur Tarun Khanna calls “ambient trust.” If a product is FDA-approved we feel confident it's safe. If someone makes an untrue claim or breaks an agreement we can sue. Police don't demand bribes to do their jobs. Certainly there are exceptions, but when brought to light they provoke a scandal, not a shrug. This is not the case in the developing world. But rather than become casualties of mistrust, Khanna shows that smart entrepreneurs adopt the mindset that, like it or not, it's up to them to weave their own independent web of trust—with their employees, their partners, their clients, their customers and with society as a whole. This can certainly be challenging, and requires innovative approaches in places where the level of societal mistrust is so high that, as in one example Khanna provides, an official certification of quality simply arouses suspicion—and lowers sales! Using vivid examples from Brazil, China, India, Mexico and elsewhere, Khanna shows how entrepreneurs can build on existing customs and practices instead of trying to push against them. He highlights the role new technologies can play (but cautions that these are not panaceas), and explains how entrepreneurs can find dependable partners in national and local governments to create impact at scale. As far back as the 18th century Adam Smith recognized trust as what Khanna calls “the hidden engine of economic progress.” “Frankness and openness conciliate confidence,” Smith wrote. “We trust the man who seems willing to trust us.” That kind of confidence is critical to entrepreneurial success, but in the developing world entrepreneurs have to establish it through their own efforts. As Khanna puts it, “the entrepreneur must not just create, she must create the conditions to create.”

For seven years, Paul Lockhart's A Mathematician's Lament enjoyed a samizdat-style popularity in the mathematics underground, before demand prompted its 2009 publication to even wider applause and debate. An impassioned critique of K–12 mathematics education, it outlined how we shortchange students by introducing them to math the wrong way. Here Lockhart offers the positive side of the math education story by showing us how math should be done. Measurement offers a permanent solution to math phobia by introducing us to mathematics as an artful way of thinking and living.

In conversational prose that conveys his passion for the subject, Lockhart makes mathematics accessible without oversimplifying. He makes no more attempt to hide the challenge of mathematics than he does to shield us from its beautiful intensity. Favoring plain English over jargon and formulas, he succeeds in making complex ideas about the mathematics of shape and motion intuitive and graspable. His elegant discussion of mathematical reasoning and themes in classical geometry offers proof of his conviction that mathematics illuminates art as much as science.

Measurement is an invitation to summon curiosity, courage, and creativity in order to experience firsthand the playful excitement of mathematical work.
