Sinossi

Tom Bullock's 'The Ideal Bartender' is an influential work in the canon of culinary literature, specifically within the vibrant sphere of mixology. The book is a tableau of pre-Prohibition American cocktail culture, a tome carefully presenting a collection of indispensable recipes, expert techniques, and insights into the convivial art of drink crafting. Within its pages, engrossed readers will find not just the mechanics of mixological skill but also the subtle social interplay that defines a true bartending savant. The literary style is precise yet imbued with the warmth and charm of a bygone era, and the edition by DigiCat Publishing has upheld the reverence for Bullock's original work by ensuring the text is presented with both historical authenticity and contemporary accessibility.

Tom Bullock, the gentleman behind the mixology manifesto, was a heralded African-American bartender who transcended the racial boundaries of his time with his consummate skills behind the bar. Bullock's experiences and prestige in the hospitality industry during the early 20th century make this book an artifact of personal expertise, impassioned instruction, and cultural heritage. His authorial voice embodies the nuances and dedication of a committed artisan, offering sage bar advice that has aged as finely as the spirits he recommends.

'The Ideal Bartender' stands as an essential read for aficionados of cocktail history and practitioners of the bartending craft. This carefully curated edition is ideal for those seeking to reconnect with the foundational elements of mixology, as much a historical document as it is a practical guide. DigiCat Publishing's reissuing of this classic caters to the modern reader's appetite for both tradition and the finer points of hospitality and service. Bullock's work is a testament to the cultural tapestry of American society and an inspiration for the contemporary bartender seeking to evoke the spirit and expertise of a bygone golden age of cocktails.

Nathaniel Hawthorne was born on 4th July 1804 in Salem, Massachusetts, a town synonymous with the earlier Salem Witch Trials. It was instrumental in Hawthorne’s later use of American Gothic and dark romanticism in his writing.
He was a mere four years old when his father died and his mother took him and his two sisters to live with her family and then on to their own home in Raymond, Maine. The young Hawthorne had a passion for fiction and poetry and voraciously read the works of Ann Radcliffe, Henry Fielding and Lord Byron.
He was sent to college at his maternal uncle’s insistence. During these years he met and befriended Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and future U S president Franklin Pierce. These friendships were lifelong and to have a crucial impact on his writings and career.
At college Hawthorne had made attempts at writing short stories and essays but without opportunities to publish. It was only in 1828 that he finally published his novel ‘Franshawe’ to little success and so he began work as editor for the American Magazine of Useful and Entertaining Knowledge.
Hawthorne’s short stories were first published in magazines but in 1837 were collected and published as ‘Twice-Told Tales’. A steady literary career still did not come his way and so he worked in a good position at Salem’s port and married the love of his life Sophia Peabody. They moved to live in ‘The Old Manse’ at Concord, Massachusetts.
Finally. in 1850 came spectacular literary and commercial success with ‘The Scarlet Letter’ followed by ‘The House of the Seven Gables’ the following year.
In 1852, Hawthorne published a biography of presidential candidate Franklin Pierce. After Pierce’s victory he was appointed consul in Liverpool, a position that offered prestige, money and fame. At the end of this appointment he returned several times to Europe before settling in Massachusetts and resuming writing and publication.
During the early 1860’s his health declined and on 19th May 1864 during a trip to Plymouth, New Hampshire. He was 59 and was buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord, Massachusetts.

The Blue Lagoon is the story of two cousins, Dicky and Emmeline Lestrange, stranded on a remote island with a beautiful lagoon. As children, they are cared for by Paddy Button, a portly sailor who drinks himself to death after only two and a half years in paradise. Frightened and confused by the man's gruesome corpse, the children flee to another part of Palm Tree Island. Over a period of five years, they grow up and eventually fall in love. Sex and birth are as mysterious to them as death, but they manage to copulate instinctively and conceive a child. The birth is especially fifteen-year-old Emmeline, alone in the jungle, loses consciousness and awakes to find a baby boy on the ground near her. Naming the boy Hannah (an example of Stacpoole's penchant for gender reversals), the Lestranges live in familial bliss until they are unexpectedly expelled from their tropical Eden.

Victor-Marie Hugo (26 February 1802 - 22 May 1885) was a French poet, novelist, essayist, playwright, and dramatist of the Romantic movement. During a literary career that spanned more than sixty years, he wrote abundantly in an exceptional variety of genres: lyrics, satires, epics, philosophical poems, epigrams, novels, history, critical essays, political speeches, funeral orations, diaries, and letters public and private, as well as dramas in verse and prose.
BOOK 4: SUCCOR FROM BELOW MAY TURN OUT TO BE SUCCOR FROM ON HIGH: Thus their life clouded over by degrees. But one diversion, which had formerly been a happiness, remained to them, which was to carry bread to those who were hungry, and clothing to those who were cold.
