Sinossi

Terry Ryan was poised to take the hockey world by storm when he was selected eighth overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1995 NHL draft, their highest draft pick in a decade. Expected to go on to become a hockey star, Ryan played a total of eight NHL games for the Canadiens, scoring no goals and no assists: not exactly the career he, or anyone else, was expecting.

Though Terry’s NHL career wasn’t long, he experienced a lot and has no shortage of hilarious and fascinating revelations about life in pro hockey on and off the ice. In Tales of a First-Round Nothing, he recounts fighting with Tie Domi, partying with rock stars, and everything in between. Ryan tells it like it is, detailing his rocky relationship with Michel Therrien, head coach of the Canadiens, and explaining what life is like for a man who was unprepared to have his career over so soon.

Trishna Singh OBE was born in Glasgow in the 1950s, a first generation Scottish Bhat Sikh.  Her father came to the UK in the late 1930s and her mother followed after the Partition of India by the British in 1947.

Trishna left school, at the age of 13, with no qualifications. She had an arranged marriage, aged 21, and moved to Edinburgh to live with her husband.

As a young girl, she questioned the cultural requirements of her community which stated that married women were subservient to their mothers-in-law and their husbands, and existed solely to have children and look after their families, in direct opposition to the teachings of the Sikh religion which states man and woman are equal. And although

Trishna's marriage was a marriage of equals, she was still expected to adhere to the social and cultural restrictions placed upon her by the wider Scottish Bhat Sikh community.

Trishna's life has been challenging, in part. She has battled against her community's traditions which she rightly saw as archaic customs, begun in India, and designed to 'keep women in their place' and has lived her adult life in a city she did not grow up in but which is now her home.

In 1989 she founded Leith Sikh Community Group, now Sikh Sanjog. Its aim was to provide support for women in the Sikh community who had been settling in Edinburgh since the 1950s.

Thirty-plus years later Trishna remains a director of Sikh Sanjog, along the way having studied and attained a BA in Community Learning and Development.

A Silent Voice Speaks is her story.

Horace was one of the greatest poets during the reign of Augustus and is seen as mark of cultural sophistication since this time. This Very Short Introduction examines how Horace's poetry has exerted enormous influence but argues that it is best understood within the traditions of ancient literature.Llewellyn Morgan guides the listener through the dizzying vagaries of Horace's biography, which reflects the political and social instability of the period. His poetry, and the life he artfully constructs and presents to us in it, engages both with the greatest crisis that Rome had ever faced, and its resolution by the first Emperor. Horace is Rome's laureate, and through him we experience the anxieties and triumphs of his age. For posterity, Horace has served for a model of the good life, a promoter of enlightened retirement, but has also exemplified poetic artistry, and is the most creative manipulator of the Latin language, even among his remarkable contemporaries.

Dr. Bernard Patten authentically captures in The Great Cotzias the realities of medical research; the petty jealousies, the back biting, the desperate race to knowledge—in short the red thread of life. Using novelistic techniques, we get the details, of the events and the people involved in the discovery of the beneficial effect of L-DOPA on Parkinson’s disease.
The main character is George C. Cotzias, a Greek born, Harvard educated, hypomanic physician who in his frenetic drive to win the Nobel Prize sacrificed wife, family, friends, and, finally himself. Eventually he makes the discovery that wins him the Laska award, America’s highest honor in clinical research. The discovery proved that so-called hopeless degenerative nervous system diseases can benefit from replacement of natural body chemicals that are deficient with the disease. Worldwide, DOPA continues to be the most often used treatment for Parkinson’s disease to date.
DOPA had an interesting side effect: Improved Sino-American relations. Chairman Mao of China famously claimed that all political power comes out of the muzzle of a gun. Cotzias proved that political power can come out of medicine bottle—Mao was one of the first patients to benefit spectacularly from the new treatment.

The Black Prince and King Jean...

This study of Medieval military leadership offers a critical comparison of two great rivals of the Hundred Year War.

Known to history as The Black Prince, Edward of Woodstock led the English army to victory at the Battle of Poitiers against the French King Jean II. With an illuminating analysis of these fourteenth century commanders, historian Peter Hoskins examines the importance of leadership, strategic vision, and tactical skill in medieval warfare. Paying close attention to their strengths and weaknesses as soldiers, both on campaign and on the battlefield, Hoskins also considers their contrasting characters and backgrounds as well as the military traditions of their time.

The Black Prince was one of the most admired generals of his generation: a charismatic leader, decisive commander, and shrewd tactician and strategist. In contrast King Jean was impulsive, driven more by pride than by strategic priorities. When he was put to the ultimate test at Poitiers, Jean lost control of his army. Meanwhile, the Black Prince took the initiative personally to secure victory against the odds.

Peter Hoskins analyses the leadership qualities of the prince and the king according to the principles of war enunciated by Sun Tzu and Vegetius as well as the modern principles of war of the United Kingdom armed forces. He gives readers a fascinating insight into the nature of command and the conduct of war in the Middle Ages.
