Summary

Water Margin is a classic Chinese novel about 108 outlaws who gather at Liangshan Marsh, rebelling against corrupt officials. Blending heroism, loyalty, and tragedy, it vividly portrays their adventures, battles, and eventual fate, reflecting themes of justice and resistance in feudal society.

"Water Margin: A New Perspective (Full-Color Comic Edition)"

This book organizes the characters of the Water Margin according to the order in which the 108 heroes make their appearances, providing a concise "character profile" for each hero. This approach offers readers a fresh perspective, allowing them to understand every Liangshan hero on a more "equal" basis. Additionally, by presenting the story in the sequence of character introductions, key events from Water Margin—such as "The Clever Theft of the Birthday Gifts" and "The Three Attacks on the Zhu Family Manor"—are depicted with a clearer and more accessible narrative style.

Joe Eszterhas grew up in refugee camps and then in America's back alleys. He worked as a police reporter, racing the cops to robberies and shootings. He interviewed and wrote about mass murders and serial killers. He wrote dark, sexually graphic, and violent films like Basic Instinct, Jagged Edge, and Jade.Eszterhas knew a lot about darkness. Then, on a hellishly hot day in 2001, desperately battling to survive throat cancer and his addictions to alcohol and cigarettes, Joe Eszterhas found God. Or God found him.And he came from darkness into light.Crossbearer is the powerful, poignant, and sometimes wryly humorous account of a streetwise and cynical man's newfound faith, and of how he discovers God in the most intimate and routine moments of life: a family game of baseball, a child's photograph of a cloud, a dying mother's dying roses. It is also the inspiring story of a man who must overcome his addictions to stay alive—and can't by himself. He realizes that he needs the love of his wife, his children, and especially his new friend, God, to do it.Eszterhas is a master memoirist—his Hollywood Animal was called "powerful and affecting" (The New York Times), "absolutely first-rate" (Los Angeles Times BookReview) and "heartbreaking, funny and outrageous" (Houston Chronicle)—and with Crossbearer he reveals a fresh and completely unexpected new chapter of his life. With surprising tenderness and a willingness to bare even weaknesses and mistakes, Joe Eszterhas has written a startling personal story about faith, values, family and love.

I Am Not Myself These Days follows a glittering journey through Manhattan's dark underbelly—a shocking and surreal world where alter egos reign and subsist (barely) on dark wit and chemicals...a tragic romantic comedy where one begins by rooting for the survival of the relationship and ends by hoping someone simply survives. Kilmer-Purcell is a terrifically gifted new literary voice who straddles the divide between absurdity and normalcy, and stitches them together with surprising humor and lonely poignancy. As Booklist raved, I Am Not Myself These Days is "as tart and funny as a Noël Coward play, for Kilmer-Purcell is especially good at dialogue, and, as in Coward's best plays, under the comedy lies the sad truth that even at our best, we are all weak, fallible fools. Again and again in this rich, adventure-filled book, Kilmer-Purcell illustrates the truth of Blake's proverb, 'The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom.'"

For Stefany Anne Golberg, the morning itself became a possibility she could no longer tolerate, so at age fourteen, she erased it all together.

In a ranch house in a Vegas suburb, Golberg’s peculiar brand of insomnia lives alongside an ailing father, a professor on permanent leave from the local university. Her mother has moved out, her older brother has gone to college, and she is alone with the night, resisting the fundamental unit by which we measure our lives: the next day itself.

Startling, poignant, and harrowing, Golberg’s voice is informed by an eclectic range of interests, from Bruegel to Jung, Loren Eiseley to Marina Tsvetaeva. Equal parts coming-of-age memoir, art history, and philosophical inquiry, My Morningless Mornings is a young person’s reckoning with consciousness.

The Incas had consolidated their empire only a century before Pizarro and his Spanish conquistadores took control of Inca lands in the 1530s. The Incan heartland was the Andes Mountains from Ecuador down through Peru into parts of northern Chile, including what is now Bolivia, some of Argentina, and in the north, bits of what is now Colombia. It covered about 770,000 square miles, far larger than Spain, and held an estimated 14 million people, more than in Spain, comprised of many different indigenous groups.
Lima was the seat of the Viceroyalty of Peru, which included almost all of the Spanish colonial region in South America. Then, Peru meant today’s Peru, Ecuador, and parts of Chile, and in the mid-18th century, a new Viceroyalty of La Plata was set up, based in what is now Buenos Aires. Upper Peru was centered on La Paz and Chuquisaca (since renamed Sucre after the hero of independence), and Peru was centered on Lima and Cuzco. The addition of La Plata as a viceroyalty refocused the necessary slow of silver from Lima and Peru to Buenos Aires and the Atlantic. The Audiencia of Charcas (Bolivia) was placed under La Plata’s authority.
In one sense, the Spanish conquest was simply a shift of empires for the indigenous peoples. The Incas were as imperialistic as Spain, and they put down rebellions with the same ferocity. However, Incan rule was generally mild and concerned with the welfare of the empire’s people. The indigenous people chafed under Spanish rule, and the lost Incan days were idolized in popular memory. This set the stage for one of the most famous and mythologized conflicts in the history of the Americas.

Chronicling his meteoric rise to power and allegations of corruption, Thomas O. Harris's The Kingfish tells of Huey P. Long's many social reforms, which endeared him to the rural poor and made him an enemy of big business. Long was a man who, through hard work and perseverance, surpassed all boundaries previously aligned with American politicians. Harris very vividly points out the overall danger of Long's politics and his underlying selfish motives. He calls Long a dictator and a threat to the American political system but finds it hard to deny the many reasons for Longs immense popularity within Louisiana.
