During her pregnancy, a dream discomposed my mother so much that her husband, tired with her importunity, at last consulted a highland seer, whose favourable interpretation he would have secured beforehand by a bribe, but found him incorruptible. She dreamed she was delivered of a tennis-ball, which the devil (who, to her great surprise, acted the part of a midwife) struck so forcibly with a racket that it disappeared in an instant; and she was for some time inconsolable for the lost of her offspring; when, all on a sudden, she beheld it return with equal violence, and enter the earth, beneath her feet, whence immediately sprang up a goodly tree covered with blossoms, the scent of which operated so strongly on her nerves that she awoke.

“How long have you worked here?’’

“Two years, sir.’’

“Very good. I trust you are a good maid, able to do as you are told?’’ Mr. Elliott asked and Helen felt his eyes on her, looking at her intently. She didn’t dare to lift her eyes, but she was sure that he was still sporting that little smile because she could hear it in his voice.

Helen almost found herself wishing that young Mr. Elliott was more like his parents, cold and snobbish, because they always said what they meant. But young Mr. Elliott seemed to be talking in code, saying one thing with his voice implying another, expecting Helen to understand. Or maybe he wasn’t expecting Helen to understand and dropped in innuendos and insinuations for his own amusement.

“I hope so, sir,’’ she said eventually, doing her best to act like she wasn’t affected by young Mr. Elliott’s games.

“I’d like to see for myself.’’ Mr. Elliott paused and Helen waited with bated breath. “Fetch me some tea, Helen.’’

It was a relief that his order turned out to be so common; Helen had almost expected something… Much less common. She didn’t really know what, but for a moment she had been convinced that he would say something that would make her stutter and blush wildly. Still, she felt herself get a little redder in the face because young Mr. Elliott had addressed her by her given name. It was more than a little bit embarrassing, swooning and blushing like this, but she had never met someone whose presence was so intense.

“Well, Doctor Hardy” he replied. “I was considering taking her to the club and making her perform for the other gentlemen. But as I’m sure you're aware, we have quite stringent standards when it comes to selecting a suitable filly. I was hoping that you would help me to discover whether Emma might be a suitable candidate?”

“Yes, I’m sure that I can,” asked Doctor Hardy. “But remind me, what characteristics should a suitable candidate exhibit?”

His Lordship stroked his moustache before replying. “Well, first of all she must be a virgin. The girl has assured me she is, and I thought that I could feel her maidenhead to be intact, but I don’t have the medical expertise to be entirely sure.”

Doctor Hardy nodded. “Certainly. I can certainly check that for you and give you a definite answer. You’re right to want to be sure. These low-born types are constantly rutting with each other. Even if she was unsullied a week ago, she might well have allowed some stable-boy or manservant to mount her in the meantime. Anything else that I’m looking for?”

“Yes, if you would. You see, it’s no fun at all if the girls we exhibit at the club don’t actually enjoy their performance. If they scream and cry and whatnot it does rather spoil the mood. But some of what we require from them is rather, well – extreme. So I was hoping you could help me put her through her paces and make sure she’s not going to blub and cry at the crucial moment?”

The Doctor rubbed his hands together, seemingly delighted at this request. “Oh, absolutely, it would be my pleasure. I assume you intend to assist me? The results of the examination will be much more robust if I can call upon a second pair of hands.”
