Sinopsis

The Art of War is a Chinese military treatise that was written during the 6th century BC by Sun Tzu. Composed of 13 chapters, each of which is devoted to one aspect of warfare, it has long been praised as the definitive work on military strategies and tactics of its time.

The Art of War is one of the oldest books on military strategy in the world. It is the first and one of the most successful works on strategy and has had a huge influence on Eastern and Western military thinking, business tactics, and beyond. Sun Tzu was the first to recognize the importance of positioning in strategy and that position is affected both by objective conditions in the physical environment and the subjective opinions of competitive actors in that environment. He taught that strategy was not planning in the sense of working through a to-do list, but rather that it requires quick and appropriate responses to changing conditions.

From the New York Times–bestselling author and Dear Sugars columnist, an arousing story collection exploring modern love in the age of hook-up culture.   Steve Almond’s My Life in Heavy Metal presents twelve passion-fueled stories—including his Pushcart Prize-winning story “The Pass”—that take a clear-eyed view of relationships between young men and women who have come of age in an era without innocence. These are powerful and resonant stories of love and lust that bring to life a generation’s search for connection in a fragmented world.   In the title story, an El Paso newspaper clerk assigned to review the heavy metal bands playing local arenas is drawn in by the primal music, fueling a torrid affair with a Mexican-American woman that will change him forever. In “Geek Player, Love Slayer,” a thirty-three-year-old woman harbors a secret crush on the young computer repairman in her office-until her ardor is unleashed at an after-work party. In “Valentino,” two teenagers in their last summer before college experience a sexual awakening inspired by the romantic legend of a movie star from long ago.   A book The Guardian called “hip social satire,” My Life in Heavy Metal captures the moments when the fires of passion burn over and subside into embers of pain and longing.   “[A] gifted storyteller . . . [Almond] writes with a loose, anthropological humor.” —The New York Times Book Review   “Fourteen delightful debut stories.” —Kirkus Reviews, starred review

In her debut collection of short fiction, Amanda Peters describes the Indigenous experience from an astonishingly
wide spectrum in time and place—from contact with the first European settlers, to the forced removal of
Indigenous children, to the present-day fight for the right to clean water
In this intimate collection, Amanda Peters melds traditional storytelling with beautiful, spare prose to describe
the dignity of the traditional way of life, the humiliations of systemic racism and the resilient power to endure. A
young man returns from residential school only to realize he can no longer communicate with his own parents.
A grieving mother finds purpose and healing on the front lines as a water protector. And a nervous child dances
in her first Mawi’omi. The collection also includes the Indigenous Voices Award-winning and title story “Waiting
    for the Long Night Moon.”
At times sad, sometimes disturbing but always redemptive, the stories in Waiting for the Long Night Moon
will remind you that where there is grief there is also joy, where there is trauma there is resilience and, most
    importantly, there is power.

"Here speaks the man of masts and sails, to whom the sea is not a navigable element, but an intimate companion. The length of passages, the growing sense of solitude, the close dependence upon the very forces that, friendly to-day, without changing their nature, by the mere putting forth of their might, become dangerous to-morrow, make for that sense of fellowship which modern seamen, good men as they are, cannot hope to know." In this volume of essays, more than in any other single work, we get to see clearly just what Joseph Conrad's years working on sail-powered ships meant to him — and they certainly meant a great deal to him, for all Conrad's subsequent fretting that he might be typed as "only" a writer of the sea. This collection is particularly renowned for the lengthy episode titled "The Tremolino", where Conrad gives us, in the character of the real-world Dominic, the model of his fictional Nostromo, as well as an account of personalities and gun-running activities he would later depict in "The Arrow of Gold".

In this selection of some of Saki's best short stories, we enter a fictional world in which the Edwardian gently are pitched against the rude forces of nature and maiden aunts struggle unsuccessfully to contain the merciless antics of children in their charge. Saki is perhaps the ultimate master of writing complete stories in just a few pages and his sublime craftsmanship is accompanied by a wicked black humour. The combination of sharp comedy and precise technique is quite unique and completely irresistible. These stories are read for you by Richard Mitchley who has worked in theatres throughout Britain as well as the BBC and ITV together with his own Mayfly Theatre company and Eve Karpf who trained at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. She is widely experienced both as a reader of audio books and as a BBC radio actress.
