The Art of War' is an ancient Chinese military treatise dating from the 5th century BC and is attributed to the ancient Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu. The text is composed of 13 chapters, each of which is devoted to one aspect of warfare and it is commonly thought of as a definitive work on military strategy and tactics. It was placed at the head of China's Seven Military Classics upon the collection's creation in 1080 by Emperor Shenzong of Song, and has long been the most influential strategy text in East Asia. It has had an influence on Eastern and Western military thinking, business tactics, legal strategy and beyond.

Navigation by Judgment - Why and...

Foreign aid organizations collectively spend hundreds of billions of dollars annually, with mixed results. Part of the problem in these endeavors lies in their execution. When should foreign aid organizations empower actors on the front lines of delivery to guide aid interventions, and when should distant headquarters lead? In Navigation by Judgment, Dan Honig argues that high-quality implementation of foreign aid programs often requires contextual information that cannot be seen by those in distant headquarters. Tight controls and a focus on reaching pre-set measurable targets often prevent front-line workers from using skill, local knowledge, and creativity to solve problems in ways that maximize the impact of foreign aid. Drawing on a novel database of over 14,000 discrete development projects across nine aid agencies and eight paired case studies of development projects, Honig concludes that aid agencies will often benefit from giving field agents the authority to use their own judgments to guide aid delivery. This "navigation by judgment" is particularly valuable when environments are unpredictable and when accomplishing an aid program's goals is hard to accurately measure.

One Day University presents a series of audio lectures recorded in real-time from some of the top minds in the United States. Given by award-winning professors and experts in their field, these recorded lectures dive deep into the worlds of religion, government, literature, and social justice. Throughout American history historians, political scientists, and policymakers have frequently lamented the trajectory of the Presidency and argued for institutional reform. Some presidential observers argue that the Presidency is too powerful, while others claim it's too constrained. This lecture will assess the health of the Presidency, forecast its likely future, and offer prescriptive renovations. The guiding questions of the session will look into whether the modern institution lives up to the Founders original vision, how the American presidency compares to other presidential systems around the world, what type of presidential aspirants will dominate the future, and what institutional changes would correct any modern deficits to Article 2 of the Constitution. The lecture will end with an argument for how to change how we both vet and select the President of the United States.

This essay anthology offers enlightening perspectives on how East-Central Europe was transformed into the “other” Europe during the Cold War era.

When the Second World War ended, a new conflict arose between world powers jockeying for supremacy. The Soviet Union pursued a policy of exporting its system of government in a process known as sovietization. But there were also governments that sought to adopt a Soviet way of life on their own accord. Dictated by ideological imperatives, both styles of sovietization employed socialist strategies of state and nation building.

This volume not only examines the imposition of new forms of government, but also the socialist response to modernity as reflected in approaches to new technology and management, consumption and leisure patterns, religious and educational policy, political rituals and attitudes to the past. The essays explore the diversity and the tensions within the sovietization process in the countries of the region.

“This collection is a bold and timely attempt at shedding light on a rather insufficiently researched topic . . . the diverse approaches-ranging from socio-cultural and economic history to psycho-history.” —Dr. Dragos Petrescu, University of Bucharest.

Only two Americans held positions of great influence throughout the Cold War; ironically, they were the chief advocates for the opposing strategies for winning—and surviving—that harrowing conflict. Both men came to power during World War II, reached their professional peaks during the Cold War's most frightening moments, and fought epic political battles that spanned decades. Yet despite their very different views, Paul Nitze and George Kennan dined together, attended the weddings of each other's children, and remained good friends all their lives. In this masterly double biography, Nicholas Thompson brings Nitze and Kennan to vivid life. Nitze—the hawk—was a consummate insider who believed that the best way to avoid a nuclear clash was to prepare to win one. More than any other American, he was responsible for the arms race. Kennan—the dove—was a diplomat turned academic whose famous "X article" persuasively argued that we should contain the Soviet Union while waiting for it to collapse from within. For forty years, he exercised more influence on foreign affairs than any other private citizen. As he weaves a fascinating narrative that follows these two rivals and friends from the beginning of the Cold War to its end, Thompson accomplishes something remarkable: he tells the story of our nation during the most dangerous half century in history.

For at least a decade, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, theworld's leading breast cancer organization, had been dealing with the backlashfrom pro-life conservatives because of its grants to Planned Parenthood, theworld's largest abortion provider. According to Karen Handel, Komen's seniorvice president of public policy in 2011, the two organizations had mutuallyagreed to part ways amicably. But then Planned Parenthood surprisinglyunleashed a media attack against Komen, waving the banner of women's health asa shield for its underlying political agenda. Public criticism against Komenintensified with damaging consequences, eventually concluding in Komen'ssurrender and Karen's resignation. In daring to walk away, Komen had unwittingly ignited abattle in which it became collateral damage in a larger election-year warbetween liberals and conservatives for the souls (and votes!) of women and thenation's conscience—with abortion and contraception linked as ultimate wedgeissues. What exactly went on inside this firestorm of controversy? Were therelarger forces at play? In this tell-all, highly charged account, Karen Handelbreaks the silence and finally reveals what really happened in the winter of2011. <w:lsdexception locked="false" priority="60" semihidden="false" unhidewhenused="fals
