Sinopsis

A poignant meditation on mortality from a beloved Canadian poet

A writer friend once pointed out that whenever Stuart Ross got close to something heavy and “real” in a poem, a hamburger would inevitably appear for comic relief. In this hybrid essay/memoir/poetic meditation, Ross shoves aside the heaping plate of burgers to wrestle with what it means to grieve the people one loves and what it means to go on living in the face of an enormous accumulation of loss. Written during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, shortly after the sudden death of his brother left him the last living member of his family and as a catastrophic diagnosis meant anticipating the death of his closest friend, this meditation on mortality — a kind of literary shiva — is Ross’s most personal book to date. More than a catalogue of losses, The Book of Grief and Hamburgers is a moving act of resistance against self-annihilation and a desperate attempt to embrace all that was good in his relationships with those most dear to him.

Contentment is the quiet acceptance of life as it unfolds, embracing both the moments of joy and the challenges that shape our experience. It is not a fleeting emotion or a temporary state of mind, but a deeper sense of peace and fulfillment that comes from within. In a world driven by the pursuit of more—more success, more wealth, more recognition—contentment offers a counterbalance, inviting us to find satisfaction in the present rather than constantly striving for an elusive future.
This chapter explores the concept of contentment as a way of life, emphasizing that true satisfaction is rooted in our ability to appreciate the here and now. Instead of measuring our worth by external achievements or comparing ourselves to others, contentment encourages us to turn inward and acknowledge our inherent value. It is a state of mind that nurtures self-acceptance and a profound sense of inner calm, even when circumstances around us may be less than ideal.
The journey towards contentment begins with understanding the nature of our desires and the societal pressures that often drive us to chase after more. By questioning the idea that constant accumulation or the relentless pursuit of goals equates to happiness, we open the door to a more balanced and meaningful existence. In this light, contentment is not about complacency or settling for mediocrity; rather, it is about recognizing and celebrating the small moments that enrich our lives and contribute to our overall well-being.

    Speech Matters - On Lying...

To understand one another as individuals and to fulfill the moral duties that require such understanding, we must communicate with each other. We must also maintain protected channels that render reliable communication possible, a demand that, Seana Shiffrin argues, yields a prohibition against lying and requires protection for free speech. This book makes a distinctive philosophical argument for the wrong of the lie and provides an original account of its difference from the wrong of deception.Drawing on legal as well as philosophical arguments, the book defends a series of notable claims—that you may not lie about everything to the "murderer at the door," that you have reasons to keep promises offered under duress, that lies are not protected by free speech, that police subvert their mission when they lie to suspects, and that scholars undermine their goals when they lie to research subjects. Many philosophers start to craft moral exceptions to demands for sincerity and fidelity when they confront wrongdoers, the pressures of non-ideal circumstances, or the achievement of morally substantial ends. But Shiffrin consistently resists this sort of exceptionalism, arguing that maintaining a strong basis for trust and reliable communication through practices of sincerity, fidelity, and respecting free speech is an essential aspect of ensuring the conditions for moral progress, including our rehabilitation of and moral reconciliation with wrongdoers.

The most famous geyser is Old Faithful, named in 1870 during the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition. In 1871, the US Geological and Geographical Survey, led by Dr. F.V. Hayden, reached the Upper Geyser Basin. In just over a day, the explorers witnessed eruptions of many geysers still seen today, including Giantess, Beehive, Grotto, Castle, and Old Faithful. Yellowstone became the first National Park in 1872. Since then, visitors have come in increasing numbers to witness the unique geysers, numerous wildlife, and spectacular scenery.

Two brothers in conflict sire half-twin sons, as they battle to determine the fate of a property dynasty. Intertwined conflict and humour are the lifestyle hallmarks of the relationship between 18 year old twins Aaron and Josh. Aaron, as the too-young manager of the family's large rural property, sees himself as in his rightful position. Josh (as a worker on the property) sees his own rightful position as not having to take orders from Aaron. One instance of their difficult relationship results in Josh having to take the blame for Aaron's irresponsible driving, when Aaron nearly causes a head-on collision with a Highway Patrol car. Tash (Aaron's girlfriend) becomes pregnant to both Josh and Aaron, that is with half-twin sons due to heteropaternal superfecundation and they all have to live with the consequences. Due to the untimely death of their Grandfather, Charlie, Aaron and Josh find themselves bidding against each other at a public auction for their shares of the family property. Elizabeth, Mother of Aaron and Josh, has their secret past outed to her sons. A financially over-committed Aaron is forced to sell his part of the property to Chinese investors. As the supreme irony, Josh becomes a resentful Aaron's boss. The 5 year old sons of Josh and Aaron act beyond their years to protect Tash from Aaron's excesses towards her.
