Sinopsis

Born in the foothills close to the Himalaya Steve Berry had from an early age an urge to become a traveller, an adventurer, an explorer, and until the age of thirty-eight years he tried hard to satisfy two opposing forces. Half of him wanted to find a satisfactory career path while the other half wanted to be free and specifically explore the Himalaya. In the end he found a compromise to satisfy both needs. In 1987 with his climbing friend Steve Bell he founded Himalayan Kingdoms, a travel company specialising in trekking and expedition holidays. This book is a collection of stories from his early expeditions to the Himalaya prior to 1987. There are tales of encounters with bears, escapes from avalanches, summit successes and failures, love stories mystical connections, Himalayan storms, near death accidents, raw travel across the Indian sub-continent, and grapples with bureaucracy. It is told warts and all. It starts with tales of youthful naivety in the mountains of Himachal Pradesh, progresses to what Steve describes as his best ever adventure, the first British ascent of Nun, 7,135m/23,410ft, in Kashmir, and finishes with the truth of what happened on the failed attempt to climb Bhutan's highest peak, Gangkar Punsum, 7550m/24,770ft. Of Straight Up Steve says: 'I just really wanted people to enjoy reading of our adventures the way they were.'

2 April 2011. After 28 years, the cricket World Cup returned to India when Dhoni's boys beat Sri Lanka on a day that ended in a shower of champagne and confetti. They had started the tournament as favourites, but in the early stages had appeared shaky. Then came the turning point. India were a more purposeful side in the knockout stage, their fielding and bowling efforts now on par with the batting. Led by their captain cool, India took on Australia in Ahmedabad, Pakistan in Mohali and then Sri Lanka in Mumbai with a palpable belief in their own ability. It meant they beat all the former champions. Suresh Menon, easily one of India's best cricketwriters, relives the roller-coaster that was the 2011 World Cup, taking us through the highlights, the disappointments and doubts as well as the triumphs. From Virender Sehwag's boundary off the first ball of the World Cup to Dhoni's final six to the transformation of Yuvraj Singh, it's all here. A running commentary as well as a historical document of one of India's sporting epics.

A chronicle of our national pastime’s most unforgettable era from the bestselling author of The Summer Game—“No one writes better about baseball” (The Boston Globe).   Classic New Yorker sportswriter Roger Angell calls 1972 to 1976 “the most important half-decade in the history of the game.” The early to mid-1970s brought unprecedented changes to America’s ancient pastime: astounding performances by Nolan Ryan and Hank Aaron; the intensity of the “best-ever” 1975 World Series between the Cincinnati Reds and the Boston Red Sox; the changes growing from bitter and extended labor strikes and lockouts; and the vast new influence of network television on the game. Angell, always a fan as well as a writer, casts a knowing but noncynical eye on these events, offering a fresh perspective to baseball’s continuing appeal during this brilliant and transformative era.

This workout focuses on engaging all the muscles in the leg region. While jumping jacks aren't exclusively a leg exercise, they enhance blood circulation, which helps maintain proper blood flow to the brain. Focusing on a single muscle group for too long can lead to dizziness and fatigue. This article also benefits from insights provided by the popular website "She Squats Bro." Featuring contributions from: Emma O'Reilly, the soigneur for the U.S. Postal Service Team and one of the people responsible for bringing Lance Armstrong down as part of David Walsh's investigation; Betsy Andreu, wife of ex-professional cyclist Frankie Andreu and another Lance Armstrong nemesis; and Jen See, who interviews Marianne Vos, arguably the greatest cyclist in the world right now. When Marie Marvingt decided to ride the 1908 Tour de France she was told "absolument, non!" Instead, she rode each stage fifteen minutes after the official racers had departed and finished all 4,488 kms of the parcours--a feat that only 36 of the 110 men who entered the race could equal. Her motto? "I decided to do everything better, always and forever." It's in the spirit of Breakneck Marie that this book has been written. These fresh and vibrant voices examine the sport from a new perspective to provide insights that rarely make it into the mainstream: what is it like to be a top women rider or to work in their support team? Where is the women's sport heading and when will more women be represented at the highest level of sport's governance?
