Summary

An inspired herbal guide to natural living with ancient techniques, remedies, and rituals from around the world centered on the rhythms of the seasons.   The changing of the seasons is magickal—green leaves transforming into browns and golds, snow melting to show fresh buds. We all recognize these telltale signs, but few of us are aware of the powerful impact each season has on our spiritual lives. Whether sunny, snowy, windy, rainy, cold, or humid, the weather has a dramatic effect on our being wherever we may live.   The author, Stephanie Rose Bird, is deeply committed to keeping alive the spiritual wisdom of her indigenous African ancestors. In African American Magick, she examines the magickal ability of the seasons to enhance our lives by unearthing ancient techniques, rituals, and methods from around the world that reflect each season’s inherent energies to supplement body, mind, and soul.   Drawing upon her own ancestral heritage, as well as other cultures and those that have influenced her, Bird offers a lifetime of wisdom and expert botanical knowledge while sharing her path to a holistic and magickal life. Guidance from all over the world, and from classical and modern traditions alike, are offered: Spiritual insights from Caribbean African American culture Wisdom from indigenous Native American traditions Buddhist and Hindu meditation practices and rites Practices of classical European spiritual traditions Lessons from Aboriginal Australian “dreaming” practices African American Magick was previously published in 2006 under the title Four Seasons of Mojo. This new edition includes a new preface by the author.

It is unclear if U.S. policy makers and military leaders fully realize that we have already been thrust into an artificial intelligence race with authoritarian powers. The United States' peer adversaries—China and Russia—have made clear their intentions to make major investments in AI and insert this technology into their military systems, sensors, and weapons. Algorithms of Armageddon examines this most pressing security issue in a clear, insightful delivery by two experts.

The authors cover in depth debates surrounding the AI "genie out of the bottle" controversy, AI arms races, and the resulting impact on policy and the laws of war. Given that global powers are leading large-scale development of AI, it is likely that use of this technology will be global in extent. Will AI-enabled military weapons systems lead to full-scale global war? The later chapters of the work explore these questions, point to the possibility of humans failing to control military AI applications, and conclude that the dangers for the United States are real.

Neither a protest against AI, nor a speculative work on how AI could replace humans, Algorithms of Armageddon provides a time-critical understanding of why AI is being implemented through state weaponization, the realities for the global power balance, and more importantly, U.S. national security.

What an amazing episode! My guest Star is here to talk to us about the "heroine's journey". The heroine's journey came about in 1990 when Maureen Murdock, a psychologist published a book called The Heroine's Journey: Woman's Quest for Wholeness.
My guest Star is here to talk to us about Heroine's Journey and we are discussing the heroine's journey in Lucy Maud Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables and Jo's heroine's journey in Little Women. I was told that Gilbert's proposal to Anne in the 80s AOGG is almost exactly the same as Laurie's proposal to Jo in 1933 Little Women. Of course, I had to check if this was true and I have recorded these two proposals and mine and Star's reactions. It is an interesting detail and I think it might be one of the reasons why so many people somehow link Anne and Gil and Jo and Laurie together. Oh Hollywood what do you do to us?

Named the fourth most important “Book of the Year” by the National Post in 2015 and voted “One Book/One Province” in Saskatchewan for 2017, The Education of Augie Merasty launched on the front page of The Globe and Mail to become a national bestseller and an instant classic.

A courageous and intimate memoir, The Education of Augie Merasty is the story of a child who faced the dark heart of humanity, let loose by the cruel policies of a bigoted nation.
A retired fisherman and trapper who sometimes lived rough on the streets, Augie Merasty was one of an estimated 150,000 First Nations, Inuit, and Metis children who were taken from their families and sent to government-funded, church-run schools, where they were subjected to a policy of aggressive assimilation.

As Augie recounts, these schools did more than attempt to mould children in the ways of white society. They were taught to be ashamed of their heritage and, as he experienced, often suffered physical and sexual abuse.
But even as he looks back on this painful part of his childhood, Merasty's sense of humour and warm voice shine through.
“In this book I have seen horror through eyes of a child.” — James Daschuk, author of Clearing the Plains

“A story in which our entire nation has an obscure and dark complicity.” — David Carpenter, co-author of The Education of Augie Merasty and author of The Gold and other books

    Written by Arthur Quinn
Read by Ed Quinn (with an introduction written and read by Julia Whelan)
The final book from esteemed Berkeley historian Arthur Quinn, Hell With the Fire Out is both a complex chronicle of a forgotten chapter in American Indian history and a vivid detailing of human foible, folly, and failure. With a novelistic flair, Quinn outlines the sad inevitability of America's westward expansion in its post-Civil War era. Wrangling all the inherent contradictions — Quaker Peace Policy vs Grant and Sherman's War Department; inter- and inner-tribal conflicts; the opposing attitudes of the region's White settlers — Quinn gives us a battle story not merely between nations and governments, but within the hearts of the very individuals at its center.
This is the first time an audio version of this book has been available and it is read by none other than the author's son, actor Ed Quinn (Two Broke Girls, One Day at a Time, Tyler Perry's The Oval).

Muckraking journalist Walter Liggett dubbed Pittsburgh the "Metropolis of Corruption" in 1930 when he reported the city had more vice per square foot than New York, Detroit, Cleveland, or Boston. Decades earlier, the Magee-Flinn political machine ruled public officials, and crooked police helped racketeers protect brothels and gambling dens. Mayor (later Governor) David Lawrence was indicted several times for graft but acquitted each time. Even Pittsburgh Steelers founder Art Rooney Sr. colluded with gangsters, according to FBI reports.
