Beschreibung

Social work students need to be able to link theory to their practice on placement. The need to support students in this area often causes anxiety for practice educators and placement supervisors. The first edition of this book was used widely by practice educators in supporting student learning in relation to theory and practice. It was so popular that many students started to use the book themselves - in response we published another book written specifically for students "Theory and Practice: A Straightforward Guide for Social Work Students". This all new edition of Social Work Theory still begins by introducing the concept of theory and practice, reminding practice educators and supervisors about the ways in which they use and apply theory every day in some aspect of their practice. Ideas are given on exercises to assist students in developing their own understanding of the use of theory in their practice. Subsequent sections briefly outline some of the key social work theories and models which will apply to any practice learning environment. Suggestions for further reading are provided throughout the text as are ideas for exercises to use with students. This second edition sees the inclusion of some newer theories and models such as the McDonaldization of social work. All the chapters have been reviewed and updated and more recent thinking on the theories and models is included. Siobhan Maclean has been a practice educator since 1992. She has worked with more than 200 students since then, mostly as an independent off site practice educator. Siobhan continues to learn from students every day. Rob Harrison has worked in several voluntary sector settings since 1996. He completed his Practice Teaching Award in 2007 and has enjoyed working with several social work students as an on site practice educator and supervisor.

Award-winning journalist David Batstone reveals the story of a new generation of 21st century abolitionists and their heroic campaign to put an end to human bondage. In his accessible and inspiring book, Batstone carefully weaves the narratives of activists and those in bondage in a way that not only raises awareness of the modern-day slave trade, but also serves as a call to action. With 2007 bringing the 200th anniversary of the climax of the 19th century abolitionist movement, the world pays tribute to great visionary figures such as William Wilberforce of the United Kingdom and American Frederick Douglass for their remarkable strides toward framing slavery as a moral issue that people of good conscience could not tolerate. This anniversary serves not only as a commemorative date for battles won against slavery, but also as a reminder that slavery and bondage still persist in the 21st century. An estimated 27 million people around the globe suffer in situations of forced labor and commercial sexual exploitation from which they cannot free themselves. Trafficking in people has become increasingly transnational in scope and highly lucrative. After illegal drug sales and arms trafficking, human trafficking is today the third most profitable criminal activity in the world, generating $31 billion annually. As many as half of all those trafficked worldwide for sex and domestic slavery are children under 18 years of age.

“Lively, well-written and informative . . . It will be of great interest to fans of railroads in the deep South and their motive power and operations.” —Railfan & Railroad

This generously illustrated narrative follows the evolution of dozens of separate railroads in the Meridian, Mississippi, area from the destruction of the town’s rail facilities in the 1850s through the current era of large-scale consolidation. Presently, there are only seven mega-size rail systems in the United States, three of which serve Meridian, making it an important junction on one of the nation’s four major transcontinental routes. The recent creation of a nationally prominent high-speed freight line between Meridian and Shreveport, the “Meridian Speedway,” has allowed the Union Pacific, Kansas City Southern, and Norfolk Southern railroads to offer the shortest rail route across the continent for Asia-US-Europe transportation.

“This volume [is] an excellent presentation, in addition to being a railroad history story that ends on a positive, upbeat note.” —Michigan Railfan

“An excellent contribution to the history of railroads in the South. Southern railroading in general has been a chronically neglected subject.” —Herbert H. Harwood, Jr., author of The Lake Shore Electric Railway Story

“Chronicles Meridian’s intriguing 155-year history as a center of railroad activity.” —The Meridian Star

The charming adventures of one family's mission to build a deeper, lasting connection to land and community on their Vermont farm.

When Ben Hewitt and his wife bought a sprawling acreage of field and forest in northern Vermont, they were eager to start a self-sustaining family farm. But over the years, the land became so much more than a building site; it became the birthplace of their two sons, the main source of family income and food, and even a classroom for their children. Through self-directed play, exploration, and experimentation on their farm, Hewitt's children learned how to play and read, test boundaries and challenge themselves, fail and recover. Best of all, this environment allowed their personalities to flourish, fueling further growth.

In Home Grown, Hewitt shows us how small, mindful decisions about day-to-day life can lead to greater awareness of the world in our backyards and beyond. In telling the story of his sons' unconventional education in the fields and forests surrounding his family's farm, he demonstrates that the sparks of learning are all around us, just waiting to be discovered. Learning is a lifelong process—and the best education is never confined to a classroom.
