Sinopsis

This edition includes the following editor's introduction: Sinclair Lewis, a controversial Nobel Laureate in Literature

First published in 1925, "Arrowsmith” is a novel by American author Sinclair Lewis that won the 1926 Pulitzer Prize (which Lewis declined with a scathing written response). The book was adapted by Hollywood as Arrowsmith in 1931.

“Arrowsmith” takes place in the fictional town of Elk Mills, Winnemac – the same fictional town and state that figure in several of Lewis's other novels. The novel follows the life of Martin Arrowsmith, a Midwestern physician. Disheartened successively by rural practice, the state of public health care, and the elitism of an urban clinic, Martin accepts a research position at an institute in New York that leads him, along with his wife, Leora, a nurse, to an epidemic-ravaged island...

"Arrowsmith” is often described as the first scientific novel considering it explores medical and scientific themes in a fictional way and it is difficult to think of an earlier book that does this.

    ~~~~~
    Excerpt ~~~~~
    From "Ménage à
    Tentacle":
    One rambunctious tentacle
    wiggled its beak into her deep cleavage and she slapped it like a naughty
    child. "I said behave, you creep!" The tentacle retreated, beak
    downcast in an unmistakable sulk. "Ohhh, baby," she intoned. She took
    it in her hands and gently pried the beak open with her thumb. The tentative
    tongue reappeared. And with it, the slick pink head.
    I watched with a curious
    mixture of disgust and fascination as the tongue slithered into her mouth and
    gently probed her cheeks. She bit down on it playfully and giggled as it made a
    sound like a raspberry. The tongue retreated into the glistening slit on the
    pink head, which Thorn stroked with her satin thumbs and then kissed.
    Mollified, the head retreated into the beak and the tentacle rolled against her
    neck like a sleepy snake. "Grapla are psychoforms," she said.
    "You and I need material things to survive. Food, water, sunlight. Grapla
    resonate to life itself. They prefer raw emotions. Fear is particularly potent,
    which is why they make such effective partners."
    The Grapla took great pride
    in what she said. Its tentacles rose in a lethal chorus and trilled a dozen
    haunting tones that melted and faded and complemented each other. It was a
    stirring sound, accompanied by the hollow clacks of its deadly beaks opening
    and shutting like hungry birds.
    For a moment, the saloon went
    silent. Large men, cyborgs, and thuggish hybrids of all shapes and sizes,
    clutched their drinks in fear.
    The sound had its most
    visible effect on Thorn. Her cheeks flushed, her bosom lifted with unconcealed
    longing. She pulled two tentacles from the pack and let them drape across her
    chest. "But love is their life," she said. "They die quickly
    without companionship. They don't grow large in the wild. Some can get by
    scavenging at the fringes of population centers, but they need a mate to
    thrive. Someone who loves them unconditionally." She kissed the tops of
    her lover's heads.
    "Do you ever miss the
    touch of your own kind?" I asked.
    Another smirk. "I had
    plenty of lovers, men and women and otherwise, before I began my trial. There
    were skilled lovers, certainly, but even the greatest geishas on Rao's moons
    cannot compare to Strabo." The tentacles, excited by her praise, wriggled
    beneath her like a bouncing throne. She stroked a thick vein that throbbed
    beneath its skin. "No one has ever loved me longer, deeper, more
    completely. No lover has ever trusted me so fully or given me such respect. I
    am his wife, his mistress, his one and only. And he is my world."
    "I assume you intend to assist me? The results of the examination will be much more robust if I can call upon a second pair of hands.”
    Emma has already willingly submitted to the firm hand of Lord Fanshawe, the handsome aristocrat who employs her as a maid, but now it seems that he requires even more of her. With the assistance of his friend Dr Hardy, he intends to put Emma through her paces and make sure that she is suitable for his depraved schemes.Will their examination prove just as enjoyable as Emma's last disciplining at the hands of his Lordship? And just what will the Doctor produce from his medical bag...?
    ~~~

    “Well, Doctor Hardy” he replied. “I was considering taking her to the club and making her perform for the other gentlemen. But as I’m sure you're aware, we have quite stringent standards when it comes to selecting a suitable filly. I was hoping that you would help me to discover whether Emma might be a suitable candidate?”

    “Yes, I’m sure that I can,” asked Doctor Hardy. “But remind me, what characteristics should a suitable candidate exhibit?”

    His Lordship stroked his moustache before replying. “Well, first of all she must be a virgin. The girl has assured me she is, and I thought that I could feel her maidenhead to be intact, but I don’t have the medical expertise to be entirely sure.”

    Doctor Hardy nodded. “Certainly. I can certainly check that for you and give you a definite answer. You’re right to want to be sure. These low-born types are constantly rutting with each other. Even if she was unsullied a week ago, she might well have allowed some stable-boy or manservant to mount her in the meantime. Anything else that I’m looking for?”

    “Yes, if you would. You see, it’s no fun at all if the girls we exhibit at the club don’t actually enjoy their performance. If they scream and cry and whatnot it does rather spoil the mood. But some of what we require from them is rather, well – extreme. So I was hoping you could help me put her through her paces and make sure she’s not going to blub and cry at the crucial moment?”

    The Doctor rubbed his hands together, seemingly delighted at this request. “Oh, absolutely, it would be my pleasure. I assume you intend to assist me? The results of the examination will be much more robust if I can call upon a second pair of hands.”
