Summary

An award-winning biography of one of the Confederacy’s most colorful and controversial generals.  Winner of the 2013 Nathan Bedford Forrest History Book Award for Southern HistoryNominated for the 2014 Virginia Book Award for Nonfiction   Despite a life full of drama, politics, and adventure, little has been written about William “Extra Billy” Smith—aside from a rather biased account by his brother-in-law back in the nineteenth century. As the oldest and one of the most controversial Confederate generals on the field at Gettysburg, Smith was also one of the most charismatic characters of the Civil War and the antebellum Old South.   Known nationally as “Extra Billy” because of his prewar penchant for finding loopholes in government postal contracts to gain extra money for his stagecoach lines, Smith served as Virginia’s governor during both the war with Mexico and the Civil War; served five terms in the US Congress; and was one of Virginia’s leading spokesmen for slavery and states’ rights. Extra Billy’s extra-long speeches and wry sense of humor were legendary among his peers. A lawyer during the heady Gold Rush days, he made a fortune in California—and, as with his income earned from stagecoaches, quickly lost it.   Despite his advanced age, Smith took to the field and fought well at First Manassas, was wounded at Seven Pines and again at Sharpsburg, and marched with Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia into Pennsylvania. There, on the first day at Gettysburg, Smith’s frantic messages about a possible Union flanking attack remain a matter of controversy to this day. Did his aging eyes see distant fence-lines that he interpreted as approaching enemy soldiers—mere phantoms of his imagination? Or did his prompt action stave off a looming Confederate disaster?   This biography draws upon a wide array of newspapers, diaries, letters, and other firsthand accounts to paint a portrait of one of the South’s most interesting leaders, complete with original maps and photos.

The suspenseful true story of a love that defied Nazi oppression, and a harrowing journey to freedom. In 1945, Ditha Bruncel was living with her parents in the small town of Lossen, in Upper Silesia. Close Jewish friends had vanished, swastikas hung from every building, and neighbors were disappearing in the middle of the night. At the same time more than fifteen hundred British and Commonwealth airmen were being marched out of Stalag Luft VII, a POW camp in the same region. Twenty-three of these prisoners managed to escape from the marching column—and by chance hobbled into Lossen. One among them, Warrant Officer Gordon Slowey, was the man Ditha was destined to meet and fall in love with. Into Enemy Arms tells the extraordinary story of Ditha and the escaped POWs she helped save. Together, they embarked on a dangerous and daring flight out of Germany. As they faced exhaustion, hunger, extreme cold, and the constant risk of discovery, Ditha and Gordon's love for one another intensified, and so did their determination to survive and escape.

The only place in the United States that Hemingway could really call home after he started writing was the tropical island of Key West. During his decade here in the 1930s, he acquired his famed macho persona as Papa, the biggest Big Daddy of them all. This vivid portrait of Ernest Hemingway's Key West reveals both Hemingway, the writer, and Hemingway, the macho, hard-drinking sportsman. His Key West years turned out to be his most productive: he finished A Farewell to Arms, started For Whom the Bell Tolls, and wrote several other books, including Green Hills of Africa, Death in the Afternoon, and To Have and Have Not. He also turned out some of his best short stories. There was plenty of time left over for eating, drinking, fighting, fishing, chasing women, and hanging out with his circle of friends (known as "the Mob"). Hemingway spent the last years of his life in Cuba, and it was here he overcame several demons—accidents, failing health, depression—to write The Old Man and the Sea, for which he won both a Pulitzer and a Nobel Prize in Literature. This book includes a two-hour walking tour of Key West and a tour of Hemingway's favorite Cuban haunts. It also includes a record of his exploits in Bimini and Cuba. Accompany Hemingway on fishing expeditions in the Gulf Stream aboard his custom-built boat, Pilar. A treat for Hemingway fans!

Three women relate their harrowing stories in this powerful true crime collection. This volume includes three accounts of horrifying crimes told by women involved in them, whether as victim, witness, or family member:  You Have a Very Soft Voice, Susan: This is not a typical story of Internet stalking. It is an unusual case of friendship and deception so pitiless and unyielding that it opened a door to Hell into the author’s life. This is an unforgettable story for today’s digital world driven by social media in all of its permutations and cruelest forms.   “A harrowing and visceral read. Fensten takes you straight into the heart of darkness in her debut book. A must-have for true crime readers everywhere.” —Jesse P. Pollack, author of The Acid King  Daddy’s Little Secret: In this poignant story, a daughter tells of learning about her father’s double life upon his murder, and her quest to assist the detectives—along the way discovering deadly secrets that could help her father’s killer escape the death penalty should she come forward.   “An engrossing true story about alternative lifestyles, domination, hidden secrets and a late night murder.” —John Ferak, bestselling author of Failure of Justice  My Son, the Killer: In 2012, Luka Magnotta had earned his notoriety by videotaping himself stabbing Chinese student Lin Jun to death with an ice pick and dismembering the body, before posting the video online. After mailing Jun's hands and feet to elementary schools, he was arrested at an Internet café in Berlin where he was reading news stories about himself. This book tells the story with input from the killer’s estranged mother.   “One of the oddest murders of our times deserves one of the most interesting books of our times. This is it.” —Patrick Quinlan, Los Angeles Times–bestselling author of Smoked
