Sinopse

Children are expected to read, write, count, and sit still at younger and younger ages. As these unrealistic expectations mount, family members and teachers alike continue to believe that these activities will prepare young children for school. But there is a better way—one that helps children build school readiness through developmentally appropriate activities. Best of all? The children can have fun!Building on Emergent Curriculum guides preschool teachers to tap into young children’s natural inclination for play to build their skills, promote their development, and, ultimately, prepare them for elementary school. Learn:why traditional theme-based units don’t work, what school readiness really looks like, how to recognize and capitalize on the many teachable moments that arise during play, andways to train teachers and involve families in emergent curriculum.Play and learning aren’t mutually exclusive. Building on Emergent Curriculum will help readers give preschoolers a solid foundation for elementary school while they do what children do best: play!

Schizophrenia is a brain disorder that’s commonly inherited from the previous generation(s). But what makes this disorder so different from other ones? And more importantly, what can we do about it?

One of the things that many people overlook, is that those who have schizophrenia lack high doses of Vitamin D. Other side effects are that they are typically highly creative, that they suffer from psychosis during stressful times in their lives, and their social interactions with others can have various impacts.

Read about all these positive and negative consequences, so that you, too, can have a better grasp of the disorder and cope with it more effectively.

This “landmark study of child development” examines the devastating effects of early childhood institutionalization (Avshalom Caspi, Duke University). In 1989, the fall of Romania's Ceausescu regime left approximately 170,000 children in impoverished institutions across the country. This crisis prompted the most comprehensive study to date on the effects of institutionalization on a child’s brain development, behavior, and psychological functioning. Romania's Abandoned Children documents this landmark study, and the devastating toll paid by children who are deprived of responsive care, social interaction, stimulation, and psychological comfort. Launched in 2000, the Bucharest Early Intervention Project was a rigorously controlled investigation of foster care as an alternative to institutionalization. Examining a total of 136 abandoned infants and toddlers, researchers randomly assigned half of them to foster care, while the other half stayed in Romanian institutions. Over a twelve-year span, both groups were assessed for physical growth, cognitive functioning, brain development, and social behavior. Data from a third group of children raised by their birth families were collected for comparison. The study found that the institutionalized children were severely impaired, but that the sooner they were placed into foster care, the better their recovery. Combining scientific, historical, and personal narratives in a gripping, often heartbreaking, account, Romania's Abandoned Children highlights the need to help the millions of parentless children living in institutions throughout the world.

If we can't steer our course in life then life will by default take us to a place where it wants to go, which is not always where we would wish to be. Staying on Top is about just that, being in charge of yourself even when the odds are stacked against you and things are perhaps not as good as they should be.
