Summary

In "Vision and Design," Roger Fry eloquently explores the interrelationship between visual aesthetics and artistic expression, positioning his discourse within the framework of early 20th-century modernism. This collection of essays reflects Fry'Äôs profound understanding of the evolving art landscape, showcasing his impressionist-influenced literary style that integrates keen analysis with rich descriptive imagery. By examining the principles of form, color, and design, Fry advocates for a renewed appreciation of visual art that transcends mere representation, calling upon artists and critics alike to embrace the innovative potential locked within abstraction and emotional resonance. Roger Fry (1866-1934) was a pivotal figure in introducing modern art to the British public, a journey profoundly shaped by his experiences as an artist and critic. A member of the Bloomsbury Group and a staunch advocate for post-Impressionism, Fry's intellectual pursuits were nurtured by his earlier study of philosophy and psychology. His travels throughout Europe further exposed him to diverse artistic movements, enabling him to foster a dialogue that would challenge conventional perceptions of art's role in society. "Vision and Design" is an essential read for anyone interested in the theory of art and aesthetics; Fry's insights invite readers to reconsider the purpose of art in a rapidly changing world. Whether you are an artist, student, or an art enthusiast, this book offers a transformative lens through which to view both historical and contemporary practices, making it a vital addition to any art library.

Steve Marriott was one of the music world's most extraordinary individuals, A supremely gifted songwriter, singer and … schemer. A vocalist from the same mould as Rod Stewart, Eric Burdon and Steve Winwood … but arguably the greatest white soul singer of them all. Marriott never held back from anything, least of all his music, his vocals always possessed an intensity, clarity and maturity that at the time were unmatched by any other singer.

His band The Small Faces were the first to be banned from Top of The Pops and were deported from Australia at gunpoint. Steve's next group Humble Pie ruled the stadiums of America but the money earned was diverted by mafia associates and he returned to the UK broke and on the run from the Taxman. In later life he struggled with schizophrenia but always continued playing - blistering gigs in front of small audiences in the pubs and clubs around London. Recently reunited with his old Humble Pie sparring partner Peter Frampton, he was on the verge of a comeback when he was tragically killed in a housefire, aged 44-years-old. A huge influence on a new generation of musicians from Paul Weller to Noel Gallagher, due to his death, Marriott has perhaps not been granted the status in Rock 'n' Roll's pantheon that he deserved. A major reassessment is long overdue. Marriott was simply one of the greatest rock stars of all time.

"An exhaustive account of the East End musical maverick, it spans his beginnings as a child prodigy, his memorable work with arch top Mods the Small Faces, and all the way through to his later work with Humble Pie, his subsequent solo career and untimely death in 1991."

    "
All Too Beautiful traces Marriott's mercurial career from his upbringing in postwar, bomb-damaged London to his cocaine-ravaged demise in a fire at his Essex home in 1991, aged 44. Revealing… sympathetic, long overdue."
    **** Uncut
"Ultimately, this is a complex story of extraordinary talent, missed chances, exotic highs and frightening lows… This comprehensive biography of Steve Marriott is as close as we're going to get to extracting the truth about Britain's finest white-soul exponent."

The story of the Woodstock Music and Art Fair begins with Michael Lang, a kid out of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, who liked to smoke a joint and listen to jazz. He would find his way to Florida, open a head shop, and produce his first festival—Miami Pop, featuring Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, and others—then travel to Woodstock, where, after meeting Artie Kornfeld, his vision for a festival where folks could come and stay for a few days amid the rural beauty of upstate New York would become a reality. With Artie, new partners John Roberts and Joel Rosenman, and his handpicked crew, Lang booked talent, from Janis Joplin and the Who to the virtually unknown Santana and Crosby, Stills, and Nash; won over agents, promoters, and townspeople; took on fleets of volunteers; built a festival site from the ground up; and, in the end, created the landmark cultural event that defined a generation.
