  This history of Civil War medical practice examines the harrowing circumstances faced by doctors and hospitals in Virginia’s capitol. The Civil War erupted toward the end of a period known as “the medical Middle Ages,” before modern knowledge of bacteria and antiseptics. Doctors of the time, who were considered fully trained after only two-years of study, had few diagnostic tools beyond their own reckoning at hand.  While medical science saw significant advances during the Civil War, hospitals in the Southern states faced overwhelming casualties with few supplies and inadequate personnel. In this study of wartime medical facilities in Richmond, Virginia, Rebecca Calcutt illustrates how exhausted resources rapidly defeated southern doctors’ heroic efforts. Richmond’s Wartime Hospitals covers the more than fifty hospitals, covering each facility’s location, dates of operation, and surgeon in charge. Where archival information is available, Calcutt includes detailed descriptions of the buildings, first-person accounts of day-to-day operations, and other historical anecdotes.

The long-term goal is to change the perspective and experience of anxiety rather than trying to eliminate it entirely. Anxiety is a natural emotion inherent in all healthy human beings. While it serves a purpose in certain situations, it becomes problematic when it interferes with daily life and becomes destructive. 
  Overwhelming anxiety hinders our ability to manage day-to-day activities, leading to muscle tension, shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, and other physical symptoms. We often try to avoid triggering situations. Not only does anxiety impact our own well-being, but it also affects the people around us, including friends and family. 
  This course emphasizes shifting and mastering our relationship with anxiety, rather than attempting to eradicate it. By becoming at ease with anxiety and accepting its presence when it arises, we can avoid getting entangled in it or trying to suppress it.

  Foul Deeds and Suspicious Deaths in and Around Wigan is a detailed guide to the town's darker side, exploring, often in gory detail, Wigan's more sinister heritage, by examining accounts of murder and suspicious deaths from the middle ages through to the twentieth century. Victorian Wigan was a town seemingly overflowing with criminals, and some of the most gruesome cases, recounted from the reports taken from the Wigan Observer and Wigan Examiner, occurred in the second half of the nineteenth century. Many of the cases are without motice or provocation. Domestic crime features highly, often involving Wigan's colliers savagely beating their wives to death, and some of the cases remains unsolved. Each of the cases are covered in detail, documenting the crime, the investigation and inquest, and culminates with the eventual court case and punishment.
