Sinopsis

In 'Ballads of a Bohemian' by Robert W. Service, the reader is taken on a poetic journey through the bohemian lifestyle of early 20th century Paris. The book is filled with lively and colorful ballads that capture the spirit of the bohemian culture, depicting scenes of love, adventure, and rebellion. Service's writing style is lyrical and expressive, reminiscent of the ballads sung by troubadours of the past. The book serves as a reflection of the author's own experiences in Paris and his fascination with the unconventional lifestyles of artists and writers of the time. Robert W. Service, known for his narrative poetry and ballads, was inspired by his time spent in Paris to write 'Ballads of a Bohemian'. As a writer who often drew from his own adventures and observations, Service's keen eye for detail and his ability to capture the essence of a place or time period shine through in this collection. I highly recommend 'Ballads of a Bohemian' to readers who enjoy rich and vivid poetry that transports them to a different world. Service's ballads are not only entertaining but also offer a glimpse into a bygone era of artistic freedom and creativity.

Acclaimed American writer, Edgar Allan Poe (1809 to 1849) was known particularly for his mysteries and tales of the macabre. He was one of the country's earliest practitioners of the short story, and is considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre.
Poe's father abandoned the family when he was just 1 year old and his mother died the following year. He was taken in by John and Frances Allan and lived with them into young adulthood. Poe attended the University of Virginia but had to leave due to lack of money. He quarreled with John Allan over the lack of funds for his education. In 1827, Poe enlisted in the United States Army under an assumed name and also published his first collection. Poe failed as an officer cadet at West Point, decided to be a full-time writer, and thus the relationship with the Allans was severed.

A collection, The Culprit Fay and Other Poems, was published posthumously by his daughter in 1835. His best-known poems are the long title-poem of that collection and the patriotic "The American Flag" which was set as a cantata for two soloists, choir and orchestra by the Czech composer Antonin Dvorák in 1892-93, as his Op. 102. In the early part of the 19th Century both Drake and his friend Halleck were widely hailed by Americans as among the leading literary personalities and talents produced by this country. That they had been leading lights in the New York area was true, but the glimmer for both could not really hold. It was finally diminished by Edgar Allan Poe when he wrote a serious study of the two poets called The Halleck - Rodman Review. Looking at The Culprit Fay by Drake, Poe showed that the imagery many marveled at was quite second-rate and ordinary. In fact, he briefly invented new lines to show how easily it could be done. The reputations of both Drake and Halleck never recovered. (Summary excerpted from Wikipedia)

Abandoning theatre, living a life of squalid splendour, August Strindberg practises alchemy. In his hotel room, he attempts to make gold by finding the philosopher's stone, the secret of creation. As his grasp on reality weakens, his first two wives visit him to bring him to his senses. But their interventions spin out of control.
For four years in fin-de-siècle Paris, Europe's most famous playwright vanished. Most people thought he had gone insane. When he reappeared, his new plays changed theatre forever.
Howard Brenton's play The Blinding Light tells the astonishing story of August Strindberg's 'Inferno' period. It premiered at Jermyn Street Theatre, London, in 2017, directed by Tom Littler.
