Summary

Set at the time of the Jacobite uprising, The Master of Ballantrae tells of a family divided. James Durie, Master of Ballantrae, abandons his ancestral home to support the Scottish rebellion - leaving his younger brother Henry, who is faithful to the English crown, to inherit the title of Lord Durrisdeer. But he is to return years later, embittered by battles and a savage life of piracy on the high seas, to demand his inheritance. Turning the people against the Lord, he begins a savage feud with his brother that will lead the pair from the Scottish Highlands to the American Wilderness. Satanic and seductive, the Master was regarded by Stevenson as 'all I know of the devil'; his darkly manipulative schemes dominate this subtle and compelling tragedy.

This audiobook is based on literature that was written in a past cultural or historical context, and includes language and depictions of people or cultures that are considered offensive to listeners. Please keep this in mind when deciding if, how and when you’ll listen.
Banned in the 1920s, and not released widely until the 1960s, Lady Chatterley’s Lover was considered one of the most scandalous books of all time. Lady Constance Chatterley is stuck in a loveless marriage until she crosses paths with Oliver Mellors, the estate’s gamekeeper. Embarking on a passionate affair with Mellors awakens desires in Lady Chatterley that she had never been able to explore within the confines of straight-laced society. As her journey of sexual self-discovery deepens, Lady Chatterley must navigate the clash of mind and body, industrialization and nature, and firmly established class distinctions.
This final novel by D. H. Lawrence has endured in significance even as societal morals have evolved and changed.

William Collins Books and Decca Records are proud to present ARGO Classics, a historic catalogue of classic prose and verse read by some of the world’s most renowned voices. Originally released as vinyl records, these expertly remastered stories are now available to download for the first time.
‘O, learn to love, the lesson is but plain,
And once made perfect, never lost again.’
Shakespeare’s great erotic poem tells the story of Venus' obsession with the handsome Adonis
In Ovid’s Metamorphoses, the boy hunter Adonis is the willing lover of Venus, the goddess of love, and dies accidentally. Shakespeare has Adonis reject Venus. Venus endlessly argues for making love, with Adonis uttering petulant protests.
All of the Shakespeare plays within the ARGO Classics catalogue are performed by the Marlowe Dramatic Society and Professional Players. The Marlowe was founded in 1907 with a mission to focus on effective delivery of verse, respect the integrity of texts, and rescue neglected plays by Shakespeare’s contemporaries and the less performed plays of Shakespeare himself. The Marlowe has performed annually at Cambridge Arts Theatre since its opening in 1936 and continues to produce some of the finest actors of their generations.
Thurston Dart, Professor of Music at London University and a Fellow of Jesus College Cambridge, directed the music for this production.
The full cast includes: Irene Worth; George Rylands; Ian Lang.
This European masterpiece, short yet profound, is a top pick among theatre enthusiasts. The best of Shakespeare's works, it showcases the performing prowess of the Marlowe Dramatic Society and Professional Players.
For fans of Richard Parsons (GCSE English Shakespeare Text Guide), and Arthur Miller (Incident at Vichy).

The bestselling novel of financial speculation in the Progressive Era from the author of McTeague.   Curtis Jadwin had to compete with other suitors to secure his wife’s hand in marriage, but after a year of marital bliss, he finds himself captivated by another: the high-stakes competition at the Chicago Board of Trade. At first merely dabbling in wheat speculation, Jadwin soon becomes obsessed with making deals and the roaring excitement of the trading pit.   In pursuit of ever greater wealth and power, Jadwin devotes his days and nights to the pit, recklessly gambling with the livelihoods of farmers he will never meet. Meanwhile, his wife is increasingly neglected and resorts to the companionship of a former suitor. But while his marriage is on the precipice of ruin, Jadwin is on the verge of his greatest win: cornering the wheat market. And while his play destroys the fortunes of many men, including his best friend, it is only when his own fortune crumbles that Jadwin will finally take stock of his life.   The second standalone novel in Norris’s planned Epic of the Wheat Trilogy, The Pit was published posthumously in 1902. A runaway bestseller and critical success, it was adapted into a Broadway play as well as the film A Corner in Wheat, directed by D. W. Griffith.  This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.
