Summary

Masters of the Burrow: 8 Classic Books on the Study of Pocket Gophers provides an unprecedented exploration of the enigmatic pocket gopher, a creature often overlooked in the annals of zoological literature. This anthology, thoughtfully curated by some of the foremost authorities in mammalogy, traverses a landscape rich with scientific inquiry and discovery. The collection includes a range of literary styles, from meticulous field observations and taxonomic analyses to studies on ecological impacts and behavior. While each piece stands robust on its own merit, collectively, they highlight the complex interplay between these subterranean rodents and their ecosystems, offering fresh insights into the ecological significance of these industrious burrowers. The anthology assembles the pioneering works of esteemed scholars such as Phillip M. Youngman, Robert J. Russell, H. Gordon Montague, E. Raymond Hall, and Bernardo Villa Ramírez, each of whom has significantly advanced the field of mammalogy. Their combined efforts offer a profound understanding of the habits, habitats, and taxonomies of pocket gophers, spanning various geographical and environmental contexts. By capturing the zeitgeist of mid-20th-century zoological studies, this collection not only reflects the scientific endeavors of its time but also aligns with broader movements in conservation and ecological awareness. Masters of the Burrow is an invaluable resource for anyone intrigued by natural history, animal behavior, or the delicate balance within ecosystems. This anthology invites readers to unravel the intricacies of pocket gophers through a tapestry of perspectives, enriching both laypersons and scholars alike with its wealth of knowledge. Engage with the text for a comprehensive exploration that transcends mere biology, inviting a dialogue that embraces curiosity and champions the profound interrelations found in the natural world.

Because of their enormous size, elephants have long been irresistible for kings as symbols of their eminence. In early civilizations—such as Egypt, Mesopotamia, the Indus Civilization, and China—kings used elephants for royal sacrifice, spectacular hunts, public display of live captives, or the conspicuous consumption of ivory—all of them tending toward the elephant’s extinction. The kings of India, however, as Thomas R. Trautmann shows in this study, found a use for elephants that actually helped preserve their habitat and numbers in the wild: war.             Trautmann traces the history of the war elephant in India and the spread of the institution to the west—where elephants took part in some of the greatest wars of antiquity—and Southeast Asia (but not China, significantly), a history that spans 3,000 years and a considerable part of the globe, from Spain to Java. He shows that because elephants eat such massive quantities of food, it was uneconomic to raise them from birth. Rather, in a unique form of domestication, Indian kings captured wild adults and trained them, one by one, through millennia. Kings were thus compelled to protect wild elephants from hunters and elephant forests from being cut down. By taking a wide-angle view of human-elephant relations, Trautmann throws into relief the structure of India’s environmental history and the reasons for the persistence of wild elephants in its forests.

Grey’s Anatomy meets One L in this psychiatrist’s charming and poignant memoir about his residency at Harvard. Adam Stern was a student at a state medical school before being selected to train as a psychiatry resident at one of the most prestigious programs in the country. His new and initially intimidating classmates were high achievers from the Ivy League and other elite universities around the nation. Faculty raved about the group as though the residency program had won the lottery, nicknaming them “The Golden Class,” but would Stern ever prove that he belonged? In his memoir, Stern pulls back the curtain on the intense and emotionally challenging lessons he and his fellow doctors learned while studying the human condition, and ultimately, the value of connection. The narrative focuses on these residents, their growth as doctors, and the life choices they make as they try to survive their grueling four-year residency. Rich with drama, insight, and emotion, Stern shares engrossing stories of life on the psychiatric wards, as well as the group’s experiences as they grapple with impostor syndrome and learn about love and loss. Most importantly, as they study how to help distressed patients in search of a better life, they discover the meaning of failure and the preciousness of success.  Stern’s growth as a doctor, and as a man, have readers rooting for him and his patients, and ultimately find their own hearts fuller for having taken this journey with him.

The power of upcycling both small-scale and large: “Szaky knows of what he speaks when it comes to trash . . . useful strategies that are available to anyone.” —Publishers Weekly   Ever-expanding landfills, ocean gyres filled with floating plastic mush, endangered wildlife. Our garbage has become a massive and exponentially growing problem in modern society.    Eco-entrepreneur and founder of TerraCycle Tom Szaky explores why this crisis exists and explains how can we solve it by eliminating the very idea of garbage. To outsmart waste, he says, we first have to understand it, then change how we create it, and finally rethink what we do with it. By mimicking nature and focusing on the value inherent in our by-products, we can transform the waste we can’t avoid creating from useless trash to a useful resource.    Szaky demonstrates that there is value in every kind of garbage, from used chewing gum to juice pouches to cigarette butts. After reading this mind-expanding book, you will never think about garbage the same way again.   “The waste industry is ripe for massive innovation and change. It takes creative minds and people with the courage to knock down doors and go around walls to be the spark. Tom is that.” —Ron Gonen, New York City Deputy Commissioner of Sanitation, Recycling, and Sustainability and cofounder and former CEO, RecycleBank
