  Álvarez travels across the US with his accordion, meeting makers and players in cities that range from San Antonio to Boston. He uncovers the story of an instrument that's been central to classic American genres, but also played a critical role in indigenous Mexican history. Like the accordion itself, Álvarez feels trapped between his roots in Mexico and the US. As he tries to make sense of his place in the world—as a father, a son, a musician—he gets closer to uncovering the mystery of his origins.

  Claudette Colbert, born Émilie Chauchoin in Saint-Mande, France, (September 13, 1903 - July 30, 1996) was a French and American actress who began her career in Broadway productions during the late 1920s and progressed to films with the advent of talking pictures. With her Mid-Atlantic accent, witty dialogues, aristocratic demeanor, and flair for light comedy and emotional drama, Colbert became one of the most popular film stars of the 1930s and 1940s. In 1934, she won the Academy Award for Best Actress for It Happened One Night. In addition to two other Academy Award nominations, Colbert earned a Tony Award nomination in 1959, won a Golden Globe in 1987 and was nominated for an Emmy.

  Charles Hardin Holley (September 7, 1936 - February 3, 1959), known as Buddy Holly, was an American singer, songwriter, and musician who was a central and pioneering figure of mid-1950s rock and roll. He was born to a musical family in Lubbock, Texas, during the Great Depression, and learned to play guitar and sing alongside his two siblings. In 1956 Holly created the band, The Crickets, with drummer Jerry Allison, bassist Joe B. Mauldin, and, from 1956 to 1958, rhythm guitarist Niki Sullivan. On February 3, 1959, Holly, Ritchie Valens, and "The Big Bopper" J. P. Richardson were all killed in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, together with pilot Roger Peterson. The event became known as "The Day the Music Died" after singer-songwriter Don McLean referred to it as such in his 1971 song "American Pie." The following audio includes several brief interviews Holly made in the late 1950s.
