Sinopse

A quartet of supernaturally seductive stories featuring vampires, succubi, demons, and more—proving that when it comes to romance, passion is immortal . . .    Ancient desires and forbidden pleasures; unnatural hungers and irresistible attractions; limitless lust and undying needs. Even creatures of the night and of the darkest dreams can’t help but give in to the power of seduction. Enter a dark world of paranormal pleasure with these four tantalizing tales . . .  “The Yearning” by Hannah Howell Alpin has spent centuries searching for something that will satisfy his unquenchable lust—something more than mere physical pleasure. Then he meets Sophie, whose own search for eternal love binds them together in a shimmering sensuality too strong to be ignored . . .  “Bitten” by Lynsay Sands The life of a vampire is one of solitude, devoid of passion or companionship. Or so Keeran thinks, until a chance encounter brings Emily into his afterlife—and sets his soul aflame with an ardor unlike any he’s known in all his many years . . .  “A Hell of a Time” by Jackie Kessler Jesse has spent an eternity stealing the souls of men with her power as a succubus. Now that she’s human—and free to satisfy her own needs—she’s ready to see how powerful her non-magical powers of seduction are . . .  “City of Demons” by Richelle Mead After what feels like an eternity, Georgina Kincaid has finally found the man of her dreams. But when she discovers that their lust could be deadly, she’ll do whatever it takes to make sure she doesn’t lose him . . .

Short stories inspired by the ancient Celtic god of love and youth, from the New York Times–bestselling author of The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency.   Angus is one of the earliest Celtic deities and one of the most cherished to this day. Like an even more handsome combination of Apollo and Eros, he is the god of love, youth, and beauty. Just the sight of him has made people fall in love, and he has the power to reveal a person’s true love in a dream, if asked politely.   Alexander McCall Smith has turned his storytelling talents to crafting a collection of short fiction from this Irish mythology. Five contemporary fables of love lost and found unfold alongside Angus’s search for the beautiful Caér, the swan maiden he met in his dreams. McCall Smith mesmerizingly unites reality and dreams, today and the ancient past, leaving the reader to wonder: what is life but the pursuit of dreams?   “Smith fluidly weaves in contemporary vignettes of the dream god’s benevolent influence, touching the lives of honeymooners on a windswept northern island; of a teenage boy sent away to boarding school in Scotland who tricks his mother into revealing who his true father is; and of a Toronto woman bereft at the discovery that her husband is having an affair. Angus, who presides over love and youth is also, it turns out, kindly to pigs. He is nicely reimagined in this spare, polished work.” —Publishers Weekly   “This slim, elegant volume is further evidence of [Smith’s] consummate ability to blend wit, wisdom, and heart.” —Booklist (starred review)

A magnificent collection of stories that bravely and honestly explore issues of race, class, sex, love, and being lesbian in AmericaAnn Allen Shockley’s work has been widely praised for its honest portrayals of lesbian life, and now the author takes an even closer look at the singular world of women in love. But the stories that make up The Black and White of It address much more than simply the female gay experience: They cast a brilliant light on race issues and prejudice, on the emotional barriers that divide women and men, on the polarizing distinctions of class and culture, and on family as a force for both good and ill. These are powerful stories of love and desire, intolerance and denial. Here, a bright, vivacious young coed attempts to bring light and love back into the sad life of a lonely middle-aged English professor. An ambitious African American congresswoman refuses to admit the truth about her sexuality, thereby jeopardizing her very special—and secret—relationship with her devoted female assistant. Shockley plunges the reader into the eye of the storm when a gay black woman brings her white lover home to meet the family on Thanksgiving.Whether exploring the ugly, deep-seated prejudice living under the surface of an academic lesbian community, relating the antebellum tale of a southern female plantation owner mesmerized by her newly acquired slave girl, or recalling the sweet, sensual awkwardness of a first date, Ann Allen Shockley writes with unabashed truthfulness, poignancy, and insight. Her stories will long be remembered by gay and straight readers alike.

Uriah Derick D’Arcy seems to all intents to be a literary pseudonym. Why no-one would want to take ownership of this story from its first publication in 1819 has been the subject of several conjectures.

The only settled agreement is that it was written by a man and from there the trail runs cold until it was reprinted in 1845 and attributed to Robert C. Sands.

But modern opinion now suggests that the true author was his fellow Columbia graduate Richard Varick Dey, a theologian, who’s religious career caused him to distance himself from the creation, in those socially difficult times, of this remarkable story.

In many respects it was far ahead of its time both in the construction and structure of its story, as an early tale of vampires and, of course, its damnation of slavery.
