Summary

Black Cat Weekly #30 is a fabulous issue. This time, Darrell Schweitzer has unearthed his 1980 interview with Tom Disch, which is fascinating. Disch talks about writing his classic fantasy novel, The Businessman, among other things. As Darrell always notes, these old interviews fall “somewhere between oral history and paleontology.”

Lots of mysteries this time, too—including an originals by Elizabeth Elwood (thanks to editor Michael Bracken) and Jack Halliday (a flash fiction portrait of a serial killer). Barb Goffman has selected “Take the Hit,” by Nikki Dolson. And we have a short story by James Holding and a classic novel by Hulbert Footner. And no issue is complete without a solve-it-yourself mystery from Hal Charles (the writing team of Hal Sweet and Charlie Blythe).

On the fantastic side of things, Cynthia Ward has selected a great science fiction tale by Matthew Hughes. I’ve seen his name for years, but never managed to read anything of his until now—but I’m definitely sold. I'm going to have to check out more of his work. Great stuff. Plus we have stories by Larry Tritten, Richard Wilson, and a vintage ghost story—or is it?—by one of my favorite authors, Anonymous!

Here’s the complete lineup:

Non-Fiction:

“Speaking with Thomas M. Disch,” conducted by Darrell Schweitzer [interview]

Mysteries / Suspense / Adventure:

“One for the Road,” by James Holding

“MeToo Too,” by Elizabeth Elwood [Michael Bracken Presents short story]

“Take the Hit,” by Nikki Dolson. [Barb Goffman Presents short story]

“A Touch of Magic,” by Hal Charles [solve-it-yourself mystery]

A Self-Made Thief, by Hulbert Footner [novel]

Science Fiction & Fantasy:

“An Odd Ghost Story,” by Anonymous [short story]

“To Tell the Phoenecians,” by Matthew Hughes [Cynthia Ward Presents short story]

Thanatos, god of death, has a mission: scour the unknown realms of the Underworld and retrieve the only daughter of his god-king, Hades. Murdered six centuries ago with her soul captured before it could pass on, she now falls under Thanatos’ domain. Armed with only a description of the location of her prison seen in a vision by her oldest brother, Thanatos has spent four years hunting for her, determined to complete his task and save her.
But when he locates Calindria, she’s not the delicate little girl he remembers—she’s a fierce, bewitching, and beautiful warrioress who stirs unwanted feelings in his black heart, and she’s on a mission of her own.
Calindria, daughter of Hades, has a mission: escape her prison, hunt down the ones who murdered her twin brother, and then make her family pay for abandoning her. But the Fates have other plans, placing a distractingly gorgeous god of death in her path—a warrior who is determined to convince her that what she believed is the truth is in fact a lie.
In a realm that turns memories against them and where anything can be an illusion, can Calindria and Thanatos learn to trust each other enough to work together to escape the hellish domain, or will the darkest moments of their past prove too powerful to overcome?

If magic could kill, it would. Or, at least it would kill Devon Jinx.

Half warlock, half . . . well, it used to be half witch, but I'm not so sure anymore. Ever since I defeated a powerful witch, my magic isn't what it used to be. And, yet, I still hunt the ring leaders of the witch slave trade.

Until a more unsavoury plot appears. Gerard, my handsome agent partner, works with me to unravel the mystery of the warlock and witch gatherings. Apparently, they want to do a lot more than party. They're prepared to create half-breeds, like me, to keep the warlock coven safe from the witches who threaten it.

And yet, from my own experience, being a half witch, half warlock, isn't all fun and games. If I don't stop the rogue supernaturals, the poor beings that are born into the world will face the same ultimatum as me: To choose just one type of magic . . . or die.

The 'ShipCraft' series provides in-depth information about building and modifying model kits of famous warship types. Lavishly illustrated, each book takes the modeller through a brief history of the subject class, highlighting differences between sisterships and changes in their appearance over their careers. This includes paint schemes and camouflage, featuring colour profiles and highly-detailed line drawings and scale plans. The modelling section reviews the strengths and weaknesses of available kits, lists commercial accessory sets for super-detailing of the ships, and provides hints on modifying and improving the basic kit. This is followed by an extensive photographic survey of selected high-quality models in a variety of scales, and the book concludes with a section on research references—books, monographs, large-scale plans and relevant websites. The latest in this series covers the three ships of this First World War type, Hood, Repulse and Renown, which survived to fight in the Second. Still the fastest capital ships in the world in 1939, their protection was not up to contemporary standards and two were famously lost in action. Hood in an old-fashioned gunnery duel, but Repulse succumbed to the more modern threat of aerial attack. The one modernised ship, Renown, survived an adventurous wartime career.
