Summary

Written by Richard Bustin, What are we Teaching?Powerful knowledge and a capabilities curriculum offers a fresh perspective on curriculum design, arguing that subjects are key to enabling young people to develop the powerful knowledge needed to flourish in a complex modern world. Moving ideas beyond the 'traditional vs progressive' debates that have dominated education discourse, Richard Bustin challenges the overarching emphasis on exam performance at the expense of the broader benefits of subject knowledge and capabilities such as critical and creative thinking.
What are we Teaching? explores curriculum debates in relation to the current school climate, considering factors such as knowledge-led education, teaching to the test, and the challenge of teacher retention and recruitment issues. It includes new research involving teachers in real schools engaging with powerful knowledge, and it prompts teachers to evaluate their responsibilities as 'curriculum makers'. The book invites teachers to consider why their subject specialism is important as part of a whole school curriculum vision, and a provides language with which to articulate that.
Part One introduces the key theories on which the book is based, including different ways of making sense of knowledge, skills and values in the curriculum, powerful knowledge and educational capabilities. What are we Teaching?is research-based, using voices of real teachers who engaged with the question 'what makes your subject powerful knowledge for young people', and Part Two, which focuses on different subject areas, examines these testimonies. The final part offers advice on building a powerful knowledge and capabilities rich curriculum in schools. Each chapter includes a set of reflective questions which can be used as part of ITE training or staff CPD.
Essential reading for teachers, senior and subject leaders and curriculum coordinators.

    - 2020 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Finalist - Science and TechnologyNo one is really Christian on their own. But often the religious life is seen as individual, private, and internal—resulting in a truncated, consumeristic faith. And what if that kind of individualistic Christianity is built on a fundamental misunderstanding of human nature?
According to psychologists Brad Strawn and Warren Brown, it's time to rethink the Christian life in light of current research on the human mind, particularly with a deeper understanding of the process called "extended cognition." Using insights from neuroscience, psychology, and philosophy, they argue in Enhancing Christian Life that persons must be understood as not only embodied and embedded within particular contexts, but also extended beyond the body to encompass aspects of the physical and social world. Embracing a vision of the Christian life as extended into interactions with a local network of believers, they help us discover a fuller, more effective way to be Christian.
After exploring the psychological dynamics of extended cognition, including how the mind is "supersized" by the incorporation of physical tools and social networks, Strawn and Brown consider implications for spiritual practices, congregational life, and religious language and traditions, which they describe as mental "wikis." The formation of robust Christian life, they show, is a process that takes place within a larger mesh of embodiment and mind—broader, deeper, and richer than we could ever be on our own.

Forensic science is in crisis and at a cross-roads. Movies and television dramas depict forensic heroes with high-tech tools and dazzling intellects who—inside an hour, notwithstanding commercials—piece together past-event puzzles from crime scenes and autopsies. Likewise, Sherlock Holmes—the iconic fictional detective, and the invention of forensic doctor Sir Arthur Conan Doyle—is held up as a paragon of forensic and scientific inspiration—does not "reason forward" as most people do, but "reasons backwards." Put more plainly, rather than learning the train of events and seeing whether the resultant clues match those events, Holmes determines what happened in the past by looking at the clues. Impressive and infallible as this technique appears to be—it must be recognized that infallibility lies only in works of fiction. Reasoning backward does not work in real life: reality is far less tidy.In courtrooms everywhere, innocent people pay the price of life imitating art, of science following detective fiction. In particular, this book looks at the long and disastrous shadow cast by that icon of deductive reasoning, Sherlock Holmes.

The principal mission of this book is to provide a simple and easy guidebook with proven tactics to help women tune into their body’s natural “language” and increase their chances of conceiving. The book introduces readers to The Four Fertility Foes ("The Big Four") that may be compromising their efforts to get pregnant. These culprits--inflammation, insulin, stress, and toxicity--are more persistent in the lives of women today than any pre- existing medical condition. Identifying the issue is an empowering first step to taking action. It also provides the know-how to start a dialogue with their doctor when conventional approaches haven’t been successful.
What makes this book different: The tone of the book is edgy and conversational, making the information relatable, less intimidating, and easy to implement. The style of writing holds the reader's attention and conveys the years of clinical experience and real stories that went into the creation of the book. The content and recommendations are the accumulation of 2 decades of clinical experience of the author, as well as evidence derived from well regarded research in the areas of nutrition, acupuncture, herbal medicine, mindfulness and more.
