Beschreibung

Even when dealing with the perilously stereotyped modern interplanetary story, the devilish pen of Ray Bradbury achieves that originality of concept, that special spark of subtle pin-pricking that has made him outstanding. This story, the develish pen of Ray Bradbury achieves that originality of concept, the most near-to-believable stage wherein one lone man can have an entire world to himself … to himself and few disquieting dreams.

It was a world that, eons ago, had suffered a devastating plague that had rendered more than half its population unable to reproduce. As a result, in order to assure the survival of their species, the HandFast law was enacted. Every month, twenty couples were drawn by lottery. Couples whose sole purpose would then be procreation, the continuation of the species. For the length of one year, two complete strangers would follow the edicts of the HandFast, until the woman conceived. Once that was accomplished, the couple was no longer bound to each other, and they could go their separate ways while the child was given to a couple unable to bear children.
It was a cold and impersonal law, but it worked.
However, the Guardians were exempt from having their names drawn in the lottery. The very nature of their jobs, risking their lives day in and day out to protect their galaxy, precluded any thought of bearing children.
Which was why, when StarLight and Master Hunter heard their names called out to be HandFasted, their neat, orderly lives were turned upside-down. Gone was the comfortable companionship they'd known. Gone was the brother-sister working relationship and the friendship.
Now they would be forced into an intimacy neither had wanted, nor expected.
Neither would they be prepared for the overwhelming passion they would find in each other's bodies, as well as in their hearts.
And things would only get more complicated and dangerous.  Because their names had been deliberately placed on the lottery, and the drawing had not been a fluke. Instead, it was the first step in destroying their world and every Guardian living.

    Grave New World
I'm Paige Harper, and I clean up supernatural messes. But my personal life is a problem.
I accidentally married a fae, and even though we're divorced he still manages to land me in hot water by putting my house on the table at a high stakes poker game. Now, he's been arrested for murder. I don't know if he did it or not. But I do know he needs to be at that poker game. I turn to Nico, a one-eyed werewolf private detective, for help. Nico is a handsome, dangerous ladies man, and I have no intention of falling prey to his charms.
    Grime & Punishment
The only thing worse than a serial killer that hates you, is a serial killer that likes you.
The only upside is that Nico has assigned himself as my personal bodyguard. He gets me hot, but I'm done with bad boys. I've got to make things work with a nice human guy. I'm juggling a new cleaning job at a supernatural brothel and trying to hunt down a kidnapped baby. Can I manage work, romance, and an obsessed serial killer? I can, or I'll die trying.
    A Farewell to Charms
Sex sells...for everyone except the person cleaning up after it!
Charms is half gambling den, half brothel, and 100 percent of my income. When Charms gets robbed, the ogre madame can't pay me, cover her bribes, or keep her teenage daughter in-line. I'm in charge of fixing all these things—while trying to figure out if the guy I'm dating is a serial killer. Nico is on the case, too. He gets under my skin, and has made it clear he wouldn't mind getting under my clothes. It's a lot of balls to keep in the air, but it's a juggling act I've got to ace, or else it's farewell to Charms, my livelihood, and maybe even my life.

Triplanetary was first serialized in Amazing Stories in 1934. After the Lensman series became popular, Smith took his Triplanetary story and turned it into the first of the Lensman series, using it as a prequel to give the back story for the protaganists in the Lensmen series. He added 6 new chapters, doubling it in size and it's really a different book from the serialized novel, being published 14 years after the first. It was put into Gutenberg just last year.
The novel covers several episodes in an eons-long eugenics project of the super-intelligences of the Arisia. This alien race is breeding two genetic lines to become the ultimate weapon in Arisia's cosmic war with their arch enemy, the Eddore. The initial chapters cover the Kinnison genetic line during the fall of Atlantis and Nero's (Gharlane of Eddore) reign in Rome. These tales were inserted into the novel following the serialized release, along with chapters covering members of the Kinnison line in World Wars One, Two and Three. The final chapter of Triplanetary tells of the discovery of the inertialess drive that allows faster than light travel. Patrolman Conway Costigan and his friends engage in a space battle with Gray Roger the pirate gangster. This conflict is complicated by the arrival of the technologically superior, extra-Solar, amphibian-like Nevians, resulting in the first interstellar war involving humans. In this story Virgil Samms and Roderick Kinnison, two very important members of the eugenics project, are introduced. They will play the leading roles in the next story, First Lensman.
