Synopsis

Such was the legend, neatly inscribed on a small white card, that met the gaze of the visitor to Number 22 Whitson. As Number 22 was the last room on the corridor, and as the single light was at the head of the stairway, the legend was none too legible after nightfall, and the boy who had paused in front of it to regain his breath after a hurried ascent of the two steep flights had difficulty in reading it. When he had deciphered it and glanced at the little cardboard box below, in which reposed a tiny scratch-pad and a stubby pencil, he smiled amusedly ere he raised his hand and rapped on the portal.

This audio adventure story tells how Donkey Ollie, Ruthie, Jehu, Alondra, Abner and Elizabeth attempt to deliver the last seven letters of John to the seven churches of Revelation - Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea. Of course, they bring their African Lion friend Theopolis and Hannibal their elephant buddy as well. After all what is a circus without a lion or elephant? By masquerading as a traveling circus, they know they will be avoiding Roman interference. They secure boat transport in Egypt from Allondra's cousin Ramses the Pharoah. Unfortunately, they decide to take a bath in the Nile which almost turns deadly for the young elephant Muwanna who is rescued from the jaws of a crocodile with the help of the whole circus troop. Finally, they set out for cities located along the rocky Asian Coast accompanied by their faithful observant Seagull Smoothfeather.
As you might expect, this audio book generally follows the screenplay and illustrated comic book, with very few changes. The song lyrics are delightfully poetic and included. The language and content are easily understood. This Circus story is definitely aimed at families, with some clever plot twists and humor for adults as well. The audio book, expertly read by Sidney Stewart is squarely aimed at a child audience with a wonderfully paced cadence. The content of the story is an effective tribute to Brian Stewart's work on Donkey Ollie. This is the eighth story in a rather wonderful series, five already exist as animated films. In my opinion, this is by far the best. There are frequent mentions of subterfuge and danger and new friendships are forged as the ensemble travels from city to city, delivering the secret letters throughout the Roman occupied lands. The Letters of John make up the basis of the Book of Revelation. This is certainly an imaginative way to deliver the letters. I am sure the Apostle John would have been delighted with it.

Hot Planet by Hal Clement - Mercury had no atmosphere—everyone knew that. Why was it developing one now?
The wind which had nearly turned the Albireo's landing into a disaster instead of a mathematical exercise was still playing tunes about the fins and landing legs as Schlossberg made his way down to Deck Five.
The noise didn't bother him particularly, though the endless seismic tremors made him dislike the ladders. But just now he was able to ignore both. He was curious—though not hopeful.
"Is there anything at all obvious on the last sets of tapes, Joe?"
Mardikian, the geophysicist, shrugged. "Just what you'd expect ... on a planet which has at least one quake in each fifty-mile-square area every five minutes. You know yourself we had a nice seismic program set up, but when we touched down we found we couldn't carry it out. We've done our best with the natural tremors—incidentally stealing most of the record tapes the other projects would have used. We have a lot of nice information for the computers back home; but it will take all of them to make any sense out of it."
Schlossberg nodded; the words had not been necessary. His astronomical program had been one of those sabotaged by the transfer of tapes to the seismic survey.
"I just hoped," he said. "We each have an idea why Mercury developed an atmosphere during the last few decades, but I guess the high school kids on Earth will know whether it's right before we do. I'm resigned to living in a chess-type universe—few and simple rules, but infinite combinations of them. But it would be nice to know an answer sometime."
"So it would. As a matter of fact, I need to know a couple right now. From you. How close to finished are the other programs—or what's left of them?"
"I'm all set," replied Schlossberg. "I have a couple of instruments still monitoring the sun just in case, but everything in the revised program is on tape."

“The Ornaments” Read-a-long version is a children’s story inspired by a unique and wonderful gift store tucked away on a side street in New York City. That store, “Domus,” is owned by two caring individuals, Nicki and Luisa, who are featured in the book.  After the holidays each year, Nicki and Luisa travel the world, often meeting with craftspeople, artists, and especially women in business. Their travels frequently take them to tiny villages in Europe, Africa, and Asia.  When they return with their curated wonders, the shop becomes a “United Nations of Gifts!”  Entering “Domus,” you walk under a large willow branch that spreads across the shop’s entire ceiling.  From this spreading branch hang dozens of enchanting and charming ornaments that move in a breeze like a Calder mobile.  Creating a story for these ornaments was irresistible since the store is so story-like.  ?“The Ornaments” is a story for children and adults, and its message of empathy, inclusion, and community is so urgent in today’s world.
