Synopsis

In 'Excalibur: An Arthurian Drama,' Ralph Adams Cram masterfully weaves a narrative tapestry imbued with the mythic grandeur of Merlin and his entwined fate with legendary medieval figures. Through stirring poetic language and a deep reverence for the Arthurian tradition, the drama not only resurrects the world of knights, honor, and mystical lore but also reflects on the eternal themes of power, succession, and destiny. Cram's literary style, rich in archaic diction and rhythmic cadence, reflects the medieval milieu, making his work both a homage to and a continuation of the chivalric epics that have shaped Western literature.

Ralph Adams Cram, an architect by trade and a literary enthusiast by passion, channels his profound understanding of medieval aesthetics into the creation of this Arthurian play. His architectural background, with its emphasis on structural integrity and design, is mirrored in the meticulous construction of his dramatic narrative. Delving into the depths of legendary lore, Cram presents an interpretation of the Arthurian saga that resonates with his expertise in and appreciation for gothic revivalism, therefore informing his literary quest to capture the essence of a bygone age.

'Rexcalibur: An Arthurian Drama' is a must-read for aficionados of Arthurian mythology and those who delight in the exploration of historical fiction through dramatic literature. Cram's work invites readers to traverse the mists of time to an era of valiant knights and enigmatic sorcerers, offering a fresh yet faithful perspective on a cornerstone of cultural heritage. Its lyrical beauty and profound exploration of themes central to human experience make this drama an enriching addition to the canon of Arthurian literature.

Notes from the Underground is a fictional collection of memoirs written by a civil servant living alone in St. Petersburg. The man is never named and is generally referred to as the Underground Man. The "underground" in the book refers to the narrator's isolation, which he described in chapter 11 as "listening through a crack under the floor".
It is considered to be one of the first existentialist novels. With this book, Dostoevsky challenged the ideologies of his time, like nihilism and utopianism. The Underground Man shows how idealized rationality in utopias is inherently flawed, because it doesn't account for the irrational side of humanity.
This novel has had a big impact on many different works of literature and philosophy. It has influenced writers like Franz Kafka and Friedrich Nietzsche. A similar character is also found in Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver.
Notes from the Underground was published in 1864 as the first four issues of Epoch, a Russian magazine by Fyodor and Mikhail Dostoevsky.

A Rich Woman - From their pens...

    Katharine Tynan

Katharine Tynan was born on 23rd January 1859 into a large family in Clondalkin, County Dublin.
The family business was cattle rearing and the farmhouse, set with the mountains for a backdrop, was a wonderful world for a young mind to learn and imagine.
She was educated at the convent school, St Catherine of Sienna, in Drogheda. A stubborn streak inhibited her ability to learn as easily as the school wished. However she did learn on her own terms and soon began to take her ‘forbidden literature’, hidden in her clothing, to her loft in a stable hideaway.
Until she turned seventeen nothing appeared to point to a literary career. But some verse printed in a Dublin newspaper changed everything. It led to a sonnet being printed in the Spectator. Thereafter the Graphic published several others and even paid a half guinea for the privilege.
In 1884 Katharine dispatched herself to London and made an abiding friendship in Alice Meynell. Alice was an established poet and helped, with her husband Wilfred, to publish many poets. The following year it was arranged for the publication of her first poetry volume, ‘Louise de la Vallière’.
She formed valuable friendships with the poets Gerard Manley Hopkins, William Butler Yeats and later Francis Ledwidge.
As she gathered friends and contacts into her life her literary output began to gather pace. Katharine had begun to write prose for the Speaker and for the Scots and National Observer.
In 1892 she married Henry Albert Hinkson, a fellow writer and a barrister. They moved to England and had five children although two were to tragically die in infancy.
By now her output was prolific and ranged from poetry to novels to short stories. It would later include a biography and further extend to editing and reviewing.
In 1912 the family returned to Claremorris, County Mayo, when her husband was appointed magistrate, a post he held until his early death in 1919.
Tynan is sometimes grouped amongst the War Poets of the First World War. Her experience was not direct but as a Mother with one son serving in France and another in Palestine, the emotions, fears and doubts are expressed in a beautiful and heart-felt way.
Involved in the Irish Literary Revival, Tynan expressed concern for feminist causes, the poor, and the effects of World War I in her work. She also meditated on her Catholic faith.
She is said to have written over 100 novels, 12 collections of short stories, plays and many volumes of enduring poetry as well as five volumes of autobiography.
Katharine Tynan Hinkson died at age 72 on 2nd April 1931 in London and is buried in Kensal Green Cemetery.

Mr. Brisher's Treasure is a short story by H. G. Wells. Herbert George "H. G." Wells (21 September 1866 - 13 August 1946) was an English writer, now best known for his work in the science fiction genre. He was also a prolific writer in many other genres, including contemporary novels, history, politics and social commentary, even writing textbooks and rules for war games. Wells is sometimes called "The Father of Science Fiction," as are Jules Verne and Hugo Gernsback. His most notable science fiction works include The War of the Worlds, The Time Machine, The Invisible Man and The Island of Doctor Moreau. Wells's earliest specialised training was in biology, and his thinking on ethical matters took place in a specifically and fundamentally Darwinian context. He was also from an early date an outspoken socialist, often (but not always, as at the beginning of the First World War) sympathising with pacifist views. His later works became increasingly political and didactic, and he sometimes indicated on official documents that his profession was that of "Journalist." Most of his later novels were not science fiction. Some described lower-middle class life (Kipps; The History of Mr Polly), leading him to be touted as a worthy successor to Charles Dickens, but Wells described a range of social strata and even attempted, in Tono-Bungay (1909), a diagnosis of English society as a whole. Wells's first non-fiction bestseller was Anticipations of the Reaction of Mechanical and Scientific Progress Upon Human Life and Thought (1901). When originally serialised in a magazine it was subtitled, "An Experiment in Prophecy,"
