Beschreibung

This is an incredible history focusing on the role of Tomás de Torquemada in the Spanish inquisition. Torquemada was a Castilian Dominican friar and the first Grand Inquisitor in Spain's movement to standardize religious conventions with those of the Catholic Church in the late 15th century. In 1483, Ferdinand and Isabella appointed a state council to administer the inquisition with Torquemada acting as its head and he ultimately acquired the title of Inquisitor-General. The accounts presented in this work are raw but factual and solid. Sabatini debunks some popular misconceptions about the inquisition and gives his own views on the time's prominent political and religious figures. This history is illustrated with trials and examples of Torquemada and the Holy Office at work. It is well-written and often surprising in its revelations.

In 1692, a small Puritan community in Massachusetts became the stage for one of the darkest episodes in American history. The Salem Witch Trials, fueled by superstition, religious zeal, and the fear of the unknown, led to over 150 accusations, countless shattered lives, and the executions of innocent men and women. But beyond the gallows and confessions lies a deeper story, one of resistance, power, and the origins of collective fear in America.
In Shadows of Salem, readers are taken inside the trials to witness how hysteria spread, how law was bent to justify injustice, and how individuals, like Giles Corey, chose silence and suffering over submission. Drawing on historical records, legal precedents, and cultural analysis, this book uncovers how Salem’s legacy shaped America’s enduring relationship with fear, authority, and social control.
From the use of spectral evidence to the crushing weight of peine forte et dure, Shadows of Salem explores not just what happened in 1692, but why it continues to haunt the American imagination. It is a story of mass panic and manipulation, but also of defiance and resilience, an essential lens for understanding both the past and the patterns of fear that still echo in modern society.
Perfect for readers of history, law, and cultural studies, Shadows of Salem offers a compelling examination of how hysteria becomes power, and how silence can be the most powerful act of resistance.

"The Basis of Morality" by Arthur Schopenhauer presents a profound inquiry into the underpinnings of ethical behavior, challenging the Kantian premise of moral acts grounded in rationality. Schopenhauer argues that true morality stems from compassion, asserting that the capacity to empathize with the suffering of others is the sole source of good. Through rigorous analysis and critique, he explores the limitations of egoism and the concept of justice, ultimately proposing a moral philosophy that prioritizes the inherent value of all living beings. This philosophical treatise invites readers to reconsider the essence of moral actions and the nature of compassion's role in ethical life. Read in English, unabridged.

In "Homo Deus," Yuval Noah Harari explores the future of humanity and the evolution of societies in the 21st century. Unlike his previous book, "Sapiens," which analyzes humanity's past, "Homo Deus" focuses on what the future might hold, considering technological advancements, artificial intelligence, and new forms of social organization. Harari argues that humanity has largely overcome three fundamental historical problems: famine, plague, and war. However, new challenges have emerged, including the pursuit of immortality, absolute happiness, and the deification of humans.
In "Homo Deus," Harari takes us to a philosophical frontier where humanity must redefine its purpose in a world increasingly dominated by technology and artificial intelligence. Beyond survival and progress, the essential question is: What does it mean to be human when consciousness is no longer exclusive to our species?
The challenge of the 21st century is not just technological but also spiritual: finding a new sense of purpose in a world where human identity is no longer the center of the universe.
