The overarching themes span power, morality, fate, and the human condition, with styles ranging from poetic odes to philosophical treatises and historical narratives to satirical monologues. In this volume, timeless pieces offer an exquisite exploration of ancient thought and culture, including poignant reflections on human virtues and vices, the intricacies of governance, and the perennial quest for wisdom. The diversity inherent in this collection not only showcases Roman literary brilliance but also highlights the enduring significance of these classical texts. The anthology brings together works from ancient luminaries such as Seneca, Cicero, and Virgil, whose collective contributions provide an unparalleled insight into the Roman worldview. Delving into both the grandeur of the Roman Empire and the intimate musings of its philosophers and poets, this volume resonates with the cultural and literary movements of its time, such as Stoicism, Epicureanism, and the Augustan Age. Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. A few pages can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere.

In this series we try to offer up tried and trusted ‘Top Tens’ across many different themes and authors. But any anthology will immediately throw up the questions – Why that story? Why that author?

The theme itself will form the boundaries for our stories which range from well-known classics, newly told, to stories that modern times have overlooked but perfectly exemplify the theme. Throughout the volume our authors whether of instant recognition or new to you are all leviathans of literature.

Some you may disagree with but they will get you thinking; about our choices and about those you would have made. If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something.

This century of literature reveals bold strides in the art of story telling. Characters and narratives begin a wonderful journey that express themselves on a wider canvas, a more global landscape. The people and the societies they represent are easily recognisable in our more modern times.

A new and special court system set up in over 20 jurisdictions around the country now gives veterans a chance at treatment and not simply punishment for their crimes. Like drug courts that began in the 1980s, they’re based on the idea of treating defendants for underlying problems in order to prevent future criminal activity. Veterans in this system agree to plead guilty to their crimes in exchange for mental health counseling, drug addiction treatment and strict monthly court appearances.
While the courts handle some serious felonies it will not take murder, attempted murder, rape, sexual assault or domestic violence. Dan May, a district attorney explains “some of that isn’t even going to be related to PTSD, quite frankly. But that’s just too spectacular to be in this program.”
While the courts have yet to be studied recidivism seems to be low; the first court in Buffalo has had 22 veterans graduate from its program, and, so far, none have committed new crimes.

When I die and people realize that I will not be resurrected in three days, they will forget me. That is the way it should be. For reasons known only to God, I was asked to write an autobiography. Most people who knew me growing up didn't think I would ever read a book, let alone write one.&#8212Lou HoltzFew people in the history of college sports have been more influential or had a bigger impact than Lou Holtz. Winner of the three national Coach of the Year honors, the only coach ever to lead six different schools to season-ending bowl games, and the ninth-winningest coach in college football history, Holtz is still teaching and coaching, although he is no longer on the gridiron. In his most telling work to date, the man still known as "Coach" by all who cross his path reveals what motivated a rail-thin 135-pound kid with marginal academic credentials and a pronounced speech impediment to play and coach college football, and to become one of the most sought-after motivational speakers in history. With unflinching honesty and his trademark dry wit, Holtz goes deep, giving us the intimate details of the people who shaped his life and the decisions he would make that shaped the lives of so many others. His is a storied career, and Holtz provides a frank and inside look at the challenges he overcame to turn around the programs at William and Mary, North Carolina State, Arkansas, and Minnesota. From growing up in East Liverpool, Ohio, to his early days as a graduate assistant at the University of Iowa, to his national championship runs at Notre Dame and his final seasons on the sidelines in South Carolina, Lou Holtz gives his best, a poignant, funny, and instructive look into a life well lived.
