Sinopse

Peter Murtagh decided it was time to embark on 'The Great Retirement Project' - riding a motorbike from Tierra Del Fuego at the very southern tip of South America, to the most northerly point in Alaska, alone and without the pressure of any deadline.
Aged 69, just him, a tent, a bike and a sleeping bag.
En route, Peter explored magical, wonderful and extraordinarily out-of-the-way parts of our bruised world, met incredible people from all walks of life and observed a great swathe of the Americas. Travelling alone on the 45,000km journey allowed him a rare opportunity to disconnect from hectic daily life and to embrace the solitude, challenge and peace-of-mind of the road less travelled.
From Tip to Top is a story of optimism and hope and the adventure of a lifetime, and is a ground-level portrait of the Americas as we rarely see them.

From time immemorial Afghanistan has both been a fortress of faith and a mountainous crossroads. Through its high valleys merchants traded Chinese porcelains, bundles of indigo cloth, sacks of lapis lazuli, golden jewellery, emeralds and fine carvings from both east and west. Ancient scrolls and beliefs entered the land in satchels of Buddhist pilgrims and in the baggage of military invaders- from Alexander the Great to Mughal, Persian and Arab conquerors and even the ill-fated armies of the British Raj. In this resonant account, Peter Levi seeks the clues which each migration left, in the company of the young Bruce Chatwin. Since his journey in the 1970s, Afghanistan has suffered forty years of invasion and civil war, making it all the more poignant to rediscover, with Levi, not a rocky wilderness guarded by fearsome tribes, but 'this highway of archangels/ this theatre of heaven/ the light garden of the God-forgiven angel King.'

Who is she without her mother—and her mother’s expectations?Desperate for answers, she turns to her favorite city—Paris—and impulsively buys a small apartment, refusing to play it safe for the first time. What starts out as an act of survival sets Lisa on a course that reshapes her life in ways she never could have imagined. Suddenly, she’s living like a local in a city she thought she knew, but her high school French, while fine for buying bread at the corner boulangerie, goes only so far when Paris gives her a strong dose of real life. From dating to homeownership in a foreign country, Lisa quickly learns it’s not all picnics on the Seine, and starts to doubt herself—and her love of the city. But she came to Paris to be happy, and she can’t give up now. Isn’t happiness worth fighting for?My (Part-time) Paris Life is a story for anyone who’s ever felt lost or hopeless, but still dreams of something more. This unsung classic of American literature helps shed light on both Ohio and the career of a writer known as the “Dean of American Letters.”  With a new introduction by Anne Trubek   A novelist, critic, and playwright, William Dean Howells was friends with such luminaries as Mark Twain, Henry James, and Oliver Wendell Holmes. Though he’s best known for his East Coast novels like The Rise of Silas Lampham and A Hazard of New Fortunes, Howells never forgot his roots in Ohio. And in Stories of Ohio, he offers a series of short vignettes that chronicle the state’s history, including:     the Native burial grounds of the Serpent Mound the first European settlers on the frontier Ohio’s role in the War of 1812 the Civil War generals and presidents the state birthed in the late nineteenth century.    Though this history primarily focuses on life in Ohio before the nineteenth century, it will help today’s reader see the state in a brand-new light.  “If these Stories distill into two hundred pages what Ohio was, they also suggest what Ohio could have been if compassion and a desire for intercultural exchange had superseded conquest as a motivating force on the frontier.” —James Bruggeman at the Russell Kirk Center for Cultural Renewal

    Zhou Dynasty - Philosophy and...

The Zhou Dynasty emerged as a dominant force in ancient China following the decline of the Shang Dynasty. Its rise was marked by strategic alliances, military conquests, and the introduction of the Mandate of Heaven, a concept that would define Chinese rulership for centuries. The Zhou people, originally a semi-nomadic tribe living in the Wei River Valley, gradually expanded their influence through diplomacy and warfare, positioning themselves as challengers to Shang authority.
King Wen of Zhou played a crucial role in laying the groundwork for the dynasty’s ascent. A respected leader known for his wisdom and virtue, he strengthened alliances with neighboring tribes and promoted administrative reforms that would later become the foundation of Zhou governance. However, it was his son, King Wu, who ultimately led the military campaign that overthrew the Shang. The decisive battle took place at Muye around 1046 BCE, where the Zhou army, though numerically inferior, defeated the Shang forces due to superior strategy and the defection of many Shang soldiers who had grown discontented with their rulers.
Following their victory, the Zhou established a new political order centered around the Mandate of Heaven. This doctrine asserted that the right to rule was granted by divine authority, but it was not absolute—rulers had to govern justly and maintain moral integrity to retain legitimacy. If they failed, they could be overthrown, as had been the case with the Shang. This belief not only justified the Zhou conquest but also set a precedent for the dynastic cycle in China.
