Summary

On September 13th 1943, two young British officers seized the chance to escape their PoW convoy after the capitulation of Italy. This catapulted them onto a two-month, seven-hundred-mile journey through enemy territory down the spine of Italy, helped by
many brave local families. This new edition of The Long Walk Home sets the record of this extraordinary adventure straight. It gives Frank Simms equal billing as author, something that was denied him by the tragic early death of his companion Peter Medd. Simms's son, Marcus Binney, fleshes out the father he barely knew, who also died young less than a decade after this daring escape, and in the process does much to put the adventure in context. He has also unearthed his father's thrilling account of his previous 'Great Escape' by tunnelling out of the PoW camp at Padula in the south of Italy.

The founder of Tofurky reveals how an idealistic hippie living in a treehouse created a global brand—and sold millions of products without selling out.   In this entertaining memoir, Seth Tibbott reveals how he achieved overnight success—but only after fifteen years of intrepid failure. He tells the triumphant tale of how a self-described hippie with no business training but plenty of enterprising goals grew a $2,500 startup into a global brand and ushered in a plant-based foods renaissance along the way.   Tibbott took home a grand total of $31,000 in his first nine years of striving to bring to the people a nearly unknown soy product—tempeh—he knew in his gut was revolutionarily tasty. He eschewed a buttoned-up lifestyle and resided in tipis, trailers, and a treehouse; rented workspace to piano-repairing circus clowns; and even briefly counted the infamous Rajneeshees as clients. Tibbott was never one to chase the money or try to fit in. Instead, he built a business that fit him.   Thus Tibbott discovered the “secret sauce” ingredients that took his now-international brand from fameless to fame-ish to famous: bootstrapping, building business intuition, and staying true to his belief in eco-friendly practices. In Search of the Wild Tofurky proves that a good idea can change the world and make money, no matter the naysayers or the sometimes-harsh twists and turns of the unconventional path.   “Expert advice and inspiration from a most unconventional source . . . An education in the business of ethics.” ―Eric C Lindstrom, author of The Skeptical Vegan

A mother recounts her journey with her son through his trials of addiction and his long road to recovery in a memoir full of honesty, humor, and hope.  The Weight of a Feather chronicles the relationship between a mother and her son from his journey into the dark world of addiction to his final recovery years later. In this raw and candid memoir, Lynda Hacker Araoz is ruthlessly honest about the deception, betrayal, and violence inherent in the world of addiction, as well as the many pitfalls one encounters on the pathway to recovery. However, she balances out the weight of her family’s struggles with lighter moments of connection with her son and the absurdities they encounter.   Above all, The Weight of a Feather is a testimony to the enduring strength of family love. It brings comfort and hope to others who are going through a similar ordeal and provides insight for those who wonder why recovery can be so elusive. Lynda urges readers to take a fresh look at the world of addiction, calling for a new model for treatment in light of the opioid epidemic impacting families across the country.

A veteran journalist uncovers the sensational love triangle between RFK, his brother’s widow, and the Greek Tycoon who plotted his assassination.

Bobby Kennedy and Aristotle Onassis, two of the world′s richest and most powerful men, disliked one another from the moment they first met. Over several decades, their mutual animosity only grew, as did their desire to compete for the affections of Jackie, the keeper of the Camelot flame.

Now, this shocking work by seasoned investigative journalist Peter Evans reveals the culmination of the Kennedy-Onassis-Kennedy love triangle: Onassis was at the heart of the plot to kill Bobby Kennedy. Nemesis meticulously traces Onassis′s trail—his connections, the way that he financed the assassination—and includes a confession kept secret for three decades. With its deeply nuanced portraits of the major figures and events that shaped an era, Nemesis is a work that will not soon be forgotten.

After seven weeks of bitter fighting there was a desperate need to break out of the Normandy bridgehead. In late July 1944 Lieutenant-General Sir Miles Dempseys Second Army moved two entire corps from the Caen sector to the relatively quiet countryside around Caumont. Here, the British XXX Corps prepared to give battle, with VII Corps advancing in support on the right flank between XXX Corps and the American first Army. The offensive did not go to plan. While the XXX Corps attack stalled, VIII Corps surged ahead. With the experienced 11th Armoured and 15th Scottish Divisions in the lead and Guards Armoured close behind, a deep penetration was made, threatening to take the pivotal city of Vire and unhinge General Haussers German Seventh Army. The main narrative of this book will span the initial break-in from Caumont on 30 July, through the armored battles of the following days, to the desperate German counter-attacks of 4 6 August, the no less desperate German defense of Estry up to the middle of the month, and the final withdrawal from Normandy. The book also examines Montys refusal to seize Vire, the disputed Anglo-American border and the Operations impact on the German Mortain offensive.
