Sinopsis

One Sunday in 2001 ear, nose and throat specialist Dr Peter Friedland received an unexpected call from Nelson Mandela's personal physician. The former president was struggling to hear. Could Peter visit him at home?
Friedland discovered that Mandela was using antiquated hearing aids and was struggling to maintain them. Soon he became a regular visitor to Mandela's home in Houghton where he experienced the elderly statesman, in the frailty of old age, away from the crowds. He was full of stories and always bearing a lesson.
But outside Mandela's quiet house, Friedland's life was ricocheting from treating one victim of violent crime to another. On many days he worked as a head and neck trauma surgeon and found himself drawn into the victims' families. When his own family and friends were exposed to violent crime, he was driven to make a life-changing decision.
In Quiet Time with the President, Friedland also examines the powerful forces that push people away from South Africa and those that pull them back. Telling his famous patient that he was planning to leave the country was insurmountably difficult for Friedland, but Mandela surprised him.
He'd accept his leaving, but on one condition . . .

National Ballot Measures 2024 - Living Democracy is my gift to the country that I love dearly and have always wanted to see it survive, thrive and improve.
Whenever I am forced to listen to a speech made by any of our Congressmen or women, I will often count the number of times they will refer to America as a 'Democracy'. They use that word an average of 15 to 20 times per speech.
They'll say things like - "Democracy is not pretty." Or they'll say, "Democracy is messy and people don't want to see how the sausage is made." Or they will say that people are trying to "end the 'American experiment in Democracy."
Or they'll quote one of the greatest of the founding fathers - Benjamin Franklin who was asked as the signers of of the Constitution were leaving: "Mr. Franklin, what kind of government have you given us?"
And Franklin replied: "A Republic, Madam, if you can keep it."
And so, we can take from this very portentous comment from Ben Franklin that the founding fathers were well aware that there would be forces someday who would try to take even this very modest amount of democracy - a Representative form of Democracy away from us.
It would take almost 250 years for this prediction to come true, but here we are under the threat of a dictatorship that could be forced upon us any minute will certainly spell the end of the American Experiment in Democracy, or it will cause a huge upheaval, perhaps even another Civil War, as many are predicting.
Not if we make a MAJOR IMPROVEMENT in our form of Government. .
Every election more than half of our registered voters sit it out and the reason is that every election we find ourselves voting for the same old same old. With the modern technology we have gained, there is no reason why we cannot vote on National Ballot Measures instead of two men in suits.

Ancient Norse mythology's fabled universe features gods, giants, and mortals living among the cosmic infrastructure of Nine Realms that will, according to the book titled "Exploring the Realms of Norse Mythology: Exploring the Nine Realms: Unveiling the Rich Tapestry of Norse Mythology," reveal itself very soon.
There were books covering each and every kingdom. The writers started with Asgard, the land of powerful gods, went on through the mysterious and fertile lands of Vanaheim to hard rocky plains of Jotunheim, the land of giants, all along assisted by the central axis formed by Yggdrasil, the World Tree.
And then readers are taken down on this road with them where epic myth and the lore of Norse culture narrates the stirring tale of heroism, honor and destiny. It has to be said that the book includes detailed retellings of important myths, old gods such as Odin, Thor, and Freyja, or spiritual and cultural ideals in this exhaustive inquiry.
The book has been built chapter by chapter upon an exploration of one of the Nine Realms: on each world's cosmic function, its inhabitants, and symbolism in Norse mythology. The book also delves into how these old tales continue to inspire and echo today in speaking to common human concerns.
"Exploring the Realms of Norse Mythology" is an enlightening, encyclopedic treatment for anyone keen on really understanding the depth and power of Norse myths, which would be ideally suited to either the connoisseur of myths or any newcomer to the subject matter. It inspires readers into rediscovering the old classics and what they have to say nowadays.

How diversity initiatives harm employees of color by turning them into workplace commodities.

Diversity programs are under attack. Should those interested in racial justice fight to keep them, or might there be another way forward? Who Pays for Diversity? reveals the costs that employees of color pay under current programs by having their racial identities commodified to benefit white people and institutions. Oneya Fennell Okuwobi proposes fresh and thoughtful ways to reorient these initiatives, move beyond tokenism, and authentically center marginalized employees.

Drawing on accounts of employees from across the workplace spectrum, from corporations to churches to universities, Who Pays for Diversity? details how the optics of diversity programs undermine employees' competence while diminishing their well-being and workplace productivity. Okuwobi argues that diversity programs have been a costly detour on the path to racial justice, and getting back on track requires solutions that provide equity, dignity, and agency to all employees, instead of defending the status quo.

"Oneya Fennell Okuwobi brilliantly uncovers the hidden costs of diversity initiatives, challenging the superficiality of such programs and the burdens they place on people of color within so-called 'diverse' environments with a powerful, evidence-backed critique. This book is an essential read for anyone committed to creating genuine racial equity in workplaces and institutions."—Mary Murphy, Herman B. Wells Endowed Professor, Indiana University
