Summary

A novel set in WWII Burma about a tragic Chinese–English alliance from the New York Times–bestselling author of Dragon Seed and The Good Earth. Burma is under attack from the Japanese army, and a unit of Chinese soldiers is sent to aid endangered British forces trapped behind enemy lines. China’s assistance hinges on a promise: In return, the Allies will supply China with airplanes and military equipment, much needed to protect their own civilian population. But the troops—including a young commander named Lao San, whom Buck fans will remember from Dragon Seed—are met with ingratitude on both sides. The Burmese deplore any friend of their abusive colonizers, and the prejudiced British soldiers can’t bring themselves to treat the Chinese as true allies. As the threat of disaster looms and the stakes grow higher, the relations between the British and Chinese troops become ever more fraught.  A trenchant critique of colonialism and wartime betrayal, The Promise is Buck at her evocative best. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Pearl S. Buck including rare images from the author’s estate.

Description 'An orchard itself is neither a true field, nor a true wood, but a holy conjoining of the two.'Servant girl Morgan Sweet spends her life in and around the sixteenth-century apple orchards of Buckland in Devon. It is an existence inextricably joined to the land, the animals, fruits and flowers signalling the passing of each season, detailed so lovingly by Morgan in her story. Life for Morgan and her friends is sometimes merry, sometimes brutal, but always dependent on the obligations of the peasant folk, the patronage of their Lord and Ladies, and the sureties of the Latin prayer book used in church where they worship each week. But in 1549 ominous change is coming to Buckland, as the familiar rituals of life start to tear apart in the bloodiest fashion. Morgan finds that not even the ancient ways her people have known and cleaved to can safeguard against revolution and the terrible measures the powerful are willing to take to quash it.Andy Brown's debut novel is fiercely imagined, rich and wise, while Morgan is a moving and ultimately heartbreaking narrator who reminds us, above all, that we must treasure what we value most.Praise for Apples and Prayers 'Playful, vicious and loving, reminiscent of John Clare and H.E. Bates.' Rob Magnuson Smith'A richly-imagined novel. Andy Brown evokes a world that is both beguiling and filled with danger.' Susanna Jones

Set against the rise of Fascism in 1920s Italy, Vincent Engel's haunting novel takes us on a journey through a wild and romantic landscape where two lonely young people forge a strange and wonderful friendship. Between the sea and the forest, in the heart of Puglia, lies the village of San Nidro, frozen in time. Here, Basilio and Lucia swear their love and loyalty until an irreparable act sets them on a collision course with the tragic realities of history

Believe it or not - the postmodern novel was invented in the 18th century.

In fact, Laurence Sterne wrote a very funny and witty book about the impossibility of writing a novel. It has inspired both readers and other writers ever since.
