This is small copy of introduction of the book: Giordano Bruno was a 16th-century Italian friar, philosopher, mathematician, astronomer, and occultist. He is best known for his cosmological theories, which anticipated the Copernican model of the universe and held that the stars are distant suns surrounded by their own planets. Bruno's ideas were considered heretical by the Catholic Church, and he was burned at the stake in Rome in 1600.
Bruno was born in Nola, Italy, in 1548. He joined the Dominican Order at the age of 15, but he soon became disillusioned with the Church's teachings. He left the Order in 1572 and began to travel throughout Europe, teaching his ideas about cosmology and philosophy.
In 1576, Bruno published his book On the Shadows of the Ideas, in which he outlined his cosmological theories. He argued that the universe is infinite and that it contains many inhabited worlds. He also rejected the Aristotelian view of the universe as a finite sphere centered on the Earth.
Bruno's ideas were controversial from the start. He was accused of heresy by the Catholic Church and forced to flee Geneva in 1583. He then spent several years in France, where he was protected by King Henry III. However, after Henry's death in 1589, Bruno was forced to flee again.
In 1591, Bruno returned to Italy. He was arrested in Venice in 1592 and extradited to Rome. He was put on trial for heresy and found guilty. On February 17, 1600, Bruno was burned at the stake in Campo de' Fiori.
Despite his execution, Bruno's ideas had a profound influence on later thinkers. His work helped to pave the way for the scientific revolution of the 17th century.

How do the microscopic particles that make up our brains cause us to experience the tranquil beauty of a setting sun, the haunting strains of Mozart’s "Requiem," or the flush of romantic love? How, in short, can consciousness be explained? In this three-part series, neuroscientist Robert Lawrence Kuhn interviews 18 guest experts about the nuts and bolts of consciousness as well its illusory aspects. Dr. Kuhn engages with his experts on a sophisticated plane without alienating you, his audience of restless souls and inquisitive minds with feet in the real world.  Each episode is crafted as a series of one-on-one interviews that respond to the title question about consciousness. The sheer scope of experts that Dr. Kuhn invites to the conversation about consciousness is staggering. Their star power is another matter altogether. In these three episodes, you’ll hear from pioneers in multiple fields, including Jaron Lanier, the computer scientist who popularized the term “virtual reality”; David John Chalmers, whose 1996 book The Conscious Mind is widely considered an essential work on consciousness and the mind-body problem; the late Marvin Lee Minsky (1927-2016), who co-founded MIT’s AI laboratory; and Galen Strawson, the British analytic philosopher and longtime consultant editor for The Times Literary Supplement. This course is part of the Learn25 collection. *Note: This audio series is brought to you by Learn25, a leading producer of lecture programs by top university professors. It was originally produced by Closer to Truth, the television series created, written, and hosted by Dr. Robert Lawrence Kuhn and co-created, produced, and directed by Peter Getzels. Closer to Truth invites the world’s foremost scientists, philosophers, and creative thinkers to debate the deepest questions facing humanity: questions of consciousness, the cosmos, and meaning.

    The Science Delusion - Asking...

    Curtis White

One of our most brilliant social critics-- author of the bestselling The Middle Mind-- presents a scathing critique of the " delusions" of science alongside a rousing defense of the tradition of Romanticism and the " big" questions. With the rise of religion critics such as Richard Dawkins, and of pseudo-science advocates such as Malcolm Gladwell and Jonah Lehrer, you' re likely to become a subject of ridicule if you wonder " Why is there something instead of nothing?" or " What is our purpose on earth?" Instead, at universities around the world, and in the general cultural milieu, we' re all being taught that science can resolve all questions without the help of philosophy, politics, or the humanities. In short, the rich philosophical debates of the 19th century have been nearly totally abandoned, argues critic Curtis White. An atheist himself, White nonetheless calls this new turn " scientism"-- and fears what it will do to our culture if allowed to flourish without challenge. In fact, in " scientism" White sees a new religion with many unexamined assumptions. In this brilliant multi-part critique, he aims at a TED talk by a distinguished neuroscientist in which we are told that human thought is merely the product of our " connectome," a map of neural connections in the brain that is yet to be fully understood. . . . He whips a widely respected physicist who argues that our new understanding of the origins of the universe obviates any philosophical inquiry . . . and ends with a learned defense of the tradition of Romanticism, which White believes our technology and science-obsessed world desperately needs to rediscover. It' s the only way, he argues, that we can see our world clearly. . . and change it.

    Paleontology - A Brief History...

Ian Tattersall, a highly esteemed figure in the fields of anthropology, archaeology, and paleontology, leads a fascinating tour of the history of life and the evolution of human beings.
Starting at the very beginning, Tattersall examines patterns of change in the biosphere over time, and the correlations of biological events with physical changes in the Earth's environment. He introduces the complex of evolutionary processes, situates human beings in the luxuriant diversity of Life (demonstrating that however remarkable we may legitimately find ourselves to be, we are the product of the same basic forces and processes that have driven the evolutionary histories of all other creatures), and he places the origin of our extraordinary spiritual sensibilities in the context of the exaptational and emergent acquisition of symbolic cognition and thought.
Concise and yet comprehensive, historically penetrating and yet up-to-date, responsibly factual and yet engaging, Paleontology serves as the perfect entrée to science's greatest story.
