Summary

In the Arizona wasteland, a wanderer meets a man he cannot trustCameron Black gallops across the alkali flats on a stolen horse, a Henry rifle at his side. Horse theft is a hanging offense in Arizona, but that means nothing to Cam. If the law catches up to him, they can only hang him once, and he has already been sentenced to die. Just twelve days earlier Cam was a law-abiding man, making his way to Tombstone in hopes of finding work. He was nearly there when he met Stony, a hardened old salt who offered to share the trail with him. This man would save Cam’s life a half-dozen times in the next few days—but he is also the reason Cam would face the hangman’s rope.Fleeing the law, Cam takes refuge in the desert, a desperate gamble that nearly amounts to a death sentence of its own. Tombstone is the most dangerous town in the West—but the wasteland around it is far deadlier.

In the 1880s a sixth daughter learns not to ask for much, even if she’s the daughter of an earl. Even if she married the richest man in her corner of Sussex. Even if she’s now a widow with a splendid Georgian mansion.
Lady Helena Whitcombe is still trying to adjust to widowhood and reconcile her family loyalties with her desires when her artist sister Odelia makes a startling suggestion. But when a shocking series of events exposes the destructive reality of a great artist’s unusual lifestyle, Helena and her lady’s maid Guttridge are called on to help—or is it to interfere?
Looming danger, the risk of scandal, and competing loyalties force Helena to re-evaluate her relationship with the sister she’s always loved the most.
What is Lady Odelia’s secret? Find out in this gripping continuation of the Scott-De Quincy Mysteries, a story that blends mystery and historical detail with Downton Abbey-style saga as the truths about Helena’s aristocratic family unfold. Listen now before the secret gets out!

Arnold Bennett was born in 1867 in Hanley one of the six towns that formed the Potteries that later joined together to become Stoke on Trent; the area in which most of his works are located. For a short time he worked for his solicitor father before realising that to advance his life he would need to become his own man. Moving to London at twenty-one he obtained work as a solicitor’s clerk and gradually moved into a career of journalism. At the turn of the century he turned full time to writing and shortly thereafter in 1903 he moved to Paris and in 1908 published to great acclaim The Old Wives Tale. With this his reputation was set. Clayhanger and The Old Wives Tale are perhaps his greatest and most lauded novels.
