  This fragment of a novel was written by Jane Austen in 1804 and remained untitled and unpublished until her nephew James Edward Austen-Leigh printed it in his A Memoir of Jane Austen in 1871. The title is from him. Mr Watson is a widowed clergyman with two sons and four daughters. The youngest daughter, Emma, has been brought up by a wealthy aunt and is consequently better educated and more refined than her sisters. But when her aunt contracts a foolish second marriage, Emma is obliged to return to her father's house. There she is chagrined by the crude and reckless husband-hunting of two of her twenty-something sisters.

  Joseph Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was an English journalist, short-story writer, poet, and novelist. Swept and Garnished is a horrifying ghost story written shortly after the outbreak of the First World War.  
  It is set against the background of German atrocities and massacres in France in which there was significant loss of civilian life. It tells the tale of a stereotypical old German lady in Berlin who is haunted by an eerie group of murdered French children.

  This Christmas tale set in Colonial New England was originally published in the 1895 collection A Budget of Christmas Tales by Charles Dickens and Others. The short story takes place in a fictionalized version of Litchfield, Connecticut, the town where Stowe grew up, which is also the setting of her novel Poganuc People: Their Loves and Lives. This version of Christmas in Poganuc was recorded as part of Dreamscape's Classic Christmas Stories: A Collection of Timeless Holiday Tales.
