Sinopse

In "Statement of the Provision for the Poor," Nassau William Senior critically examines the institutions and policies surrounding poverty alleviation in 19th-century England. Through a meticulous blend of empirical observation and moral philosophy, Senior articulates the inefficacies and unintended consequences of contemporary welfare systems. His literary style is characterized by a clear, analytical voice that invites rigorous debate, making the work a cornerstone in social policy discourse. The book offers a significant contribution to the emerging field of social economics, situating itself within the broader Victorian context of reform, industrialization, and the evolving understanding of socio-economic responsibilities. Nassau William Senior, an influential economist and a founding figure of the statistical school of political economy, drew on his extensive background in public service and academia to pen this critical assessment. His experiences as a professor at Oxford and as a member of various governmental commissions informed his insights into poverty, welfare, and moral duty. Senior was deeply concerned with the effects of poverty on society, and this work reflects his dedication to creating a more equitable system that balances compassion with practical governance. "Statement of the Provision for the Poor" is an essential read for scholars, policymakers, and anyone interested in understanding the complexities of poverty and welfare. Senior's thought-provoking arguments challenge readers to consider the moral imperatives and practical implications of social assistance, making it a vital text for contemporary discussions on poverty and ethics.

The first French invasion of Portugal in 1807 - which was commanded by Junot, one of Napoleon's most experienced generals - was a key event in the long, brutal Peninsular War. It was the first campaign fought in the Peninsular by Sir Arthur Wellesley, later Duke of Wellington, yet it tends to be overshadowed by more famous episodes in the six-year conflict that followed.David Buttery, in this original and perceptive new study, sets the record straight - his tightly focused narrative covers the entire campaign in vivid detail.

Set against the backdrop of the turbulent thirteenth century, a time of chivalry and crusades, poetry, knights, and monarchs comes the story of the four beautiful daughters of the count of Provence whose brilliant marriages made them the queens of France, England, Germany, and Sicily.

From a cultured childhood in Provence, each sister was propelled into a world marked by shifting alliances, intrigue, and subterfuge. Marguerite, the eldest, whose resolution and spirit would be tested by the cold splendor of the Palais du Roi in Paris; Eleanor, whose soaring political aspirations would provoke her kingdom to civil war; Sanchia, the neglected wife of the richest man in England who bought himself the crown of Germany; and Beatrice, whose desire for sovereignty was so acute that she risked her life to earn her place at the royal table.

A compulsively readable narrative, Four Queens shatters the myth that women were helpless pawns in a society that celebrated physical prowess and masculine intellect. A riveting historical saga for fans of Alison Weir and Antonia Fraser.

An incredible journey of traumatic near-death moments, day to day drudgery, amusing situations, and brushes with greatness in World War II.

Life for a World War II paratrooper was grave and perilous; John H. Canfield's experience was no different. However, this young man found himself in so many crazy—sometimes humorous—situations that he almost forgot about how dangerous it was.

Filled with pranksters and superiors full of bravado and an unfortunate brush with racial bigotry with a fellow African American soldier, Canfield shares his many stories from basic training and jump school. But his best stories are from the war. From having to translate a dinner for an inebriated superior using his scant French, to getting chewed out by none other than General George S. Patton, Canfield shares a wealth of experiences from his WWII tour of the European theater.

In Small Victories in a Great Big War, John H. Canfield shows that half the battle is surviving, and that he did. With bravery and flair, Canfield returned home to Connecticut with more than a few amusing anecdotes.

More than seventy-five years after the end of World War II, John H. Canfield's stories are now shared with the world.

Probably you have read of the great successes of certain men who have made such wonderful and astounding names in the history of the world. Such men, whether they consciously or unconsciously knew the secret of their powers and successes, made themselves famous by unfolding their super-conscious minds.
Now the super-conscious mind contains all the secrets of occult and magnetic power. Napoleon, who was a master of the super-conscious state, used to obtain practically eight hours rest in fifteen minutes by looking intently at a dark spot on the walls of his room.
Now this super-conscious state is called by the Hindus "samadhi" or super-consciousness. I will give you the principal secrets of this state and how to enter into it so that you may develop psychic power. There are many methods to do this with, but they are not practical and most of them are so mystical that the majority of sensible people would be foolish to think even of doing them for they are dangerous. I think that the so-called trance states should be left alone, especially with the beginner.
Every night for at least a week, just before you retire, or better just before you fall asleep, give to yourself this suggestion: "I will unfold super-consciously." Now, in a few days you will find that you are actually thinking and acting super-consciously; this is the secret of Napoleon's power.
This exercise that I am going to give you will enable you to go into the super-conscious state, but you will have to practice and practice to do it. For if you do not you will merely hypnotize yourself.
There are what might be termed three bodies in man: First, the conscious, then the thinking body, and then the causal body. If you succeed--and you should do so--in entering into this causal body, you may levitate your body, accomplish materialization, and also astral body travelling and projection.
