Summary

Pablo Escobar

Murderer, philanthropist, drug dealer, politician, devil, saint: many words have been used to describe Pablo Escobar, but one is irrefutable - legend. For the poor of Colombia, he was their Robin Hood, a man whose greatness lay not in his crimes, but in his charity; for the Colombian rich he was just a bloodthirsty gangster, a Bogie Man used to scare children in their beds; for the rest of the world flush with his imported cocaine, he was public enemy number one. When talking about Colombia, there is usually one thing that instantly comes to mind –cocaine. While this stereotype is not completely true, it is difficult not to associate the country with drugs. Naturally, the name Pablo Escobar will come up when reading about the emergence of the drug industry in the country. Escobar and his Medellin cartel once led the drug trade in Colombia, trafficking around 80% of the world’s cocaine supply. During his period of influence, Escobar amassed an estimated net worth of $25 billion.

Cop shows have been a staple of the media almost from the beginning. These fictional accounts created the easy to understand formula of ‘’diabolical crime plus brilliant detective equals the sometimes not-so-obvious solution’’.

But in the early years of the 1950s something radically different came along.

21st precinct was a very dramatic police drama and based on the workings of a true life Police Department, described in the programme as ‘’just lines on a map of the city of New York, most of the 173,000 people wedged into the nine-tenths of a square mile between 5th Ave and the East River wouldn't know if you ask them they lived or worked in the 21st. Whether they know it or not, the security of their persons, their homes, and their property is the job of the men of the 21st.’’

From the opening phone call the listener is right in the middle of the drama. Privy to the actual workings from start to conclusion.

The 21st’s manpower was made up of 160 patrolmen, eleven sergeants, and four lieutenants, under the command of one captain - Frank Kennelly, played by Everett Sloane, who was also the show’s narrator.

He’s about to take that call….

“A joy to read—a portrait of a place, a way of life, and a marriage by a reporter who turns out to be the world’s last extant romantic.” —Joan Didion   In this Tracy-Hepburn romance, a sophisticated New York intellectual is charmed by a down-to-earth newspaperman. Frankie’s Place is the tale of a summer cottage and the story that unfolds under its roof. Jim Sterba is the down-to-earth newspaperman who charms the New York sophisticate, Frances FitzGerald, after several visits to her writer’s retreat on the coast in Maine. Frankie’s place is a secluded little house out of harm’s way and the clamor of the modern world. Icy plunges into the Somes Sound christen their island mornings; then there is a long period of dutiful writing followed, in the late afternoon, by rigorous mountain walks, forays for wild mushrooms, and sailing. In the evenings Jim and Frankie prepare simple island meals as they talk about everything from the stories or books they’re working on to the bigger issue of Jim’s reunion with his long-lost father. Although they couldn’t have had more disparate childhoods—Jim grew up on a struggling Michigan farm while Frankie lived in a Manhattan town house and an English country estate—their shared summer rituals have them falling in love before our eyes.   “A highly entertaining tale of love, family, and place . . . It took me places I hadn’t expected to go. I loved it.” —Tom Brokaw
